✔️ How does Prosan 50mg Tablet work?

Prosan 50 blocks the action of a chemical messenger that causes the narrowing of the blood vessels. Hence, it relaxes the blood vessels and allows the blood to flow easily, thus lowering the blood pressure.

✔️ How to take Prosan 50mg Tablet

Prosan 50mg Tablet should be swallowed as a whole with water; do not crush or chew it.

✔️ Side Effects of Prosan 50mg Tablet

• Common Side Effects: Dizziness, diarrhea, nasal congestion, cough, and upper respiratory infections.
• Other Side Effects: Fatigue, edema, abdominal pain, chest pain, nausea, headache, and pharyngitis.

✔️ Quick Suggestions:

• Maintain a low-salt diet and minimize eating processed foods as they contain more sodium. Try to replace salt with spices or herbs to add flavor to the food.
• Do regular exercise such as cycling, walking, jogging, dancing, or swimming for a minimum of 30 minutes per day.

✔️ Hypertension:

• Losartan Potassium is used to treat high blood pressure and can be taken alone or with other antihypertensive medications like thiazide diuretics.

✔️ Renal Protection:

Approved to prevent the progression of renal disease in hypertensive type-2 diabetics with proteinuria (urine albumin to creatinine ratio > 300 mg/g).

✔️ Pharmacology

 Losartan Potassium is the first non-peptide angiotensin II receptor blocker. It binds to the AT1 receptor found in various tissues, including vascular smooth muscle, adrenal gland, kidneys, and heart, inhibiting processes such as vasoconstriction and aldosterone release, thereby reducing hypertension.

✔️ General Dose of Losartan

The usual starting and maintenance dose is 50 mg once daily. If 50 mg once daily is insufficient, 25 mg twice daily is recommended before increasing the dose further

✔️ Special Cases:

For patients with intravascular volume depletion (e.g., those on high-dose diuretics), a starting dose of 25 mg once daily is advisable. Losartan Potassium can be taken once or twice daily, with a total daily dose ranging from 25 mg to 100 mg.

✔️ Interactions

• Rifampicin and fluconazole reduce the active metabolite of Losartan Potassium. The antihypertensive effect may be enhanced when combined with hydrochlorothiazide.
• Using potassium-sparing diuretics (e.g., spironolactone, triamterene, amiloride), potassium supplements, or potassium-containing salt replacements can increase serum potassium levels.
• Indomethacin may diminish the antihypertensive effect of Losartan Potassium. Combining an ACE inhibitor, angiotensin receptor antagonist, anti-inflammatory medication, and a thiazide diuretic raises the risk of renal impairment.

• Not recommended for pregnant women.
• Contraindicated in individuals hypersensitive to any of its ingredients.
• Should not be used with Aliskiren in diabetic patients.

✔️ Pregnancy & Lactation

• Category D: Losartan Potassium poses an increased risk to the fetus if administered during the second or third trimesters of pregnancy.
• Breastfeeding: It is unknown if Losartan Potassium is excreted in human milk. Due to potential adverse effects on the nursing infant, a decision should be made to either discontinue nursing or the drug, considering its importance to the mother.

✔️ Precautions & Warnings

• Use during the second and third trimesters lowers fetal renal function and increases fetal and neonatal morbidity and mortality.
• Symptomatic hypotension can occur in patients with intravascular volume depletion (e.g., those on high-dose diuretics).
• Plasma concentration is significantly increased in cirrhotic patients.
• Changes in renal function, including renal failure, have been reported.
