Osmolax works by drawing water into the intestine through osmosis, which makes the stool soft and easier to pass.
May cause flatulence, cramps, and abdominal discomfort initially; dose adjustment usually resolves this. Overuse can cause diarrhea and electrolyte loss, especially potassium.
Osmolax 3.35 gm/5 ml Solution is a synthetic sugar that is used to treat constipation. This water helps in softening stools and reduces the amount of ammonia in the blood of patients with liver disease.
Lactulose is metabolized in the colon, producing acids that lower pH and retain water by osmosis, promoting peristalsis. It is minimally absorbed, so its therapeutic effect is localized in the colon.
No significant interactions. Potassium deficiency from abuse may intensify cardiac glycoside effects.
Hypersensitivity to galactose/lactose, galactose-free diet, gastro-cardial symptoms, suspected intestinal obstruction.
Classified as Category B by the FDA, indicating no adverse effects. Usage decisions should be made by a healthcare provider.
Use cautiously in patients with Osmolax intolerance. Higher doses for hepatic encephalopathy may require careful consideration in diabetic patients.
Store in a dry place, away from light and heat, and out of reach of children.
