✔️ Pilogen is prescribed for:

• Treating symptoms of dry mouth due to salivary gland dysfunction caused by radiotherapy for head and neck cancer.
• Treating symptoms of dry mouth in patients with Sjogren's syndrome.
  Take medication only as directed by a registered physician.

✔️ Side Effects: Pilogen 5

Possible side effects include headache, visual disturbances, excessive tearing, sweating, respiratory distress, gastrointestinal spasms, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, heart rhythm disturbances, low or high blood pressure, shock, mental confusion, and tremors. These effects are typically dose-dependent, mild, and self-limiting.

✔️ Pharmacology

Pilocarpine is a cholinergic agonist that predominantly exhibits muscarinic activity. At appropriate doses, it stimulates secretion from exocrine glands, including sweat, salivary, lacrimal, gastric, pancreatic, intestinal glands, and mucous cells of the respiratory tract. Additionally, it enhances the tone and motility of smooth muscle in the urinary tract, gallbladder, and biliary ducts.

✔️ Dosage & Administration of Pilogen 5

• For Head & Neck Cancer Patients:
  • Initial dose: One tablet three times daily.
  • Maximum daily dose: 30 mg (no more than 10 mg per dose).
  • Discontinue therapy if no improvement is observed after 2-3 months.
• For Sjogren’s Syndrome:
  • Recommended dose: One tablet (5 mg) four times daily.
  • Efficacy is established after six weeks of use.
• Tablets should be taken with a glass of water during or immediately after meals. The final dose of the day should be taken with the evening meal.
• Hepatic Impairment:
  • Moderate impairment: Start with one tablet twice daily, adjusting as needed.
  • Mild impairment: No dose adjustment required.
    Take medication only as directed by a registered physician.

✔️ Directions for Use: Pilogen 5

Always take Pilogen 5 as directed by your physician. Swallow with a glass of water and do not crush or chew it. Try to take your medicines at intervals spread out evenly over the day. The correct dose and duration will be decided by your doctor depending on your age, body weight, and health condition. Do not stop taking Pilogen 5 unless your doctor advises you to stop.

✔️ Drug Interactions

• Use cautiously in patients on beta-adrenergic antagonists due to the risk of conduction disturbances.
• Pilogen may counteract the anticholinergic effects of other medications.

✔️ Pilogen is contraindicated in patients with:

• Uncontrolled asthma.
• Cardiovascular disease.
• Hypersensitivity to pilocarpine.
• Situations where miosis is undesirable, such as acute iritis or narrow-angle glaucoma.

✔️ Pregnancy & Lactation

• Pregnancy:
  • Category C: Should only be used during pregnancy if the benefits outweigh the risks to the fetus.
• Nursing Mothers:
  • It is unknown whether Pilogen is excreted in breast milk. Consult with a physician to decide between discontinuing the drug or breastfeeding.

✔️ Children

• Safety and efficacy have not been established in pediatric patients.

✔️ Precautions & Warnings

• Administer with caution in patients with suspected or known cholelithiasis or biliary tract disease.
• Excessive sweating with inadequate fluid intake requires medical attention.
