Flecainide works by blocking fast inward sodium channels, slowing their recovery during diastole and thereby prolonging the heart’s refractory period. It shortens action potential duration in Purkinje fibers while extending action potentials in atrial and ventricular muscle by inhibiting delayed rectifier potassium channels. Additionally, flecainide blocks ryanodine receptors, reducing calcium release from the sarcoplasmic reticulum and decreasing cellular depolarization.
