Pharmacology

Mecobalamin, a coenzyme form of vitamin B12, replaces the cyano group in cyanocobalamin with a methyl group. It acts as a cofactor in methionine synthase, which is essential for transferring methyl groups to regenerate methionine from homocysteine. Mecobalamin is crucial for myelin integrity, neuronal function, red blood cell formation, and DNA synthesis. It aids in neuronal lipid synthesis, and axonal nerve regeneration, promotes axonal transport, and possesses neuroprotective properties.

Dosage & Administration of Mecolagin 0.5

Tablet:

• 0.5 mg tablet taken three times daily after meals.
• Dosage adjustments may be necessary based on age and symptom severity.

Interaction

• Absorption of vitamin B12 may be reduced by neomycin, aminosalicylic acid, H2-antagonists, omeprazole, and colchicine.
• Serum concentrations may be decreased by oral contraceptives.
• These interactions may not be clinically significant but should be considered during blood concentration assays.
