✔️ How does Empadus M 5/1000 ER work?

Empagliflozin blocks the sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) in the kidneys, reducing glucose reabsorption and increasing glucose excretion via urine.

Metformin ER suppresses hepatic glucose output and improves peripheral insulin sensitivity.
Together, they offer synergistic blood sugar control.

✔️ Dosage & Administration of Empadus M 5/1000 ER

• Recommended Dose: Start with Empagliflozin 5 mg + Metformin 1000 mg once daily with meals.
• Maximum Daily Dose: Empagliflozin 25 mg and Metformin 2000 mg
• Gradual dose titration is recommended to improve tolerability, particularly for metformin.
• Pregnancy: Not recommended, especially during the 2nd and 3rd trimesters
• Lactation: Empagliflozin and metformin are excreted in breast milk; may pose a risk to nursing infants
• Pediatrics: Safety and efficacy in patients <18 years have not been established
• Renal Impairment: Contraindicated in patients with eGFR < 30 mL/min/1.73 m²

Swallow whole with food. Do not crush or chew. Dosage should be individualized based on patient response and tolerability.

• Type 1 diabetes mellitus
• Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA)
• Severe renal impairment (eGFR < 30 mL/min/1.73 m²)
• Severe hepatic impairment
• History of lactic acidosis
• Hypersensitivity to any component
• Conditions predispose

✔️ Drug Interactions

Use with caution alongside:

• Insulin or Sulfonylureas – increased risk of hypoglycemia
• Thiazolidinediones may increase the risk of fluid retention/heart failure
• ACE inhibitors / ARBs / Diuretics – risk of hypotension and dehydration
• Steroids / Thyroid Hormones – may affect glycemic control
• Beta-blockers may mask signs of hypoglycemia

• Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
• Headache, dizziness
• Abdominal discomfort
• Fatigue
• Increased urination, dry mouth, and thirst
• Weight loss
• Serious adverse effects:
• Lactic acidosis
• Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA)
• Severe hypoglycemia (especially when used with insulin/sulfonylureas)
• Urinary tract infections (UTIs), genital yeast infections
• Urticaria, dysuria, vaginal candidiasis
