How does Emjard 10mg Tablet work?

Emjard 10mg Tablet is a medication that works by inhibiting a protein called SGLT2 in the kidneys. This action leads to the removal of glucose (blood sugar) from the bloodstream and its excretion in the urine. By reducing the concentration of sugar in the blood, Emjard 10mg Tablet helps manage and control blood sugar levels in individuals with type 2 diabetes.

Additionally, Emjard 10mg Tablet has been shown to have cardiovascular benefits. It can help protect the heart and reduce the risk of heart-related complications in people with diabetes.

Side Effects of Emjard 10mg Tablet

Common side effects include urinary tract infections, female genital mycotic infections, dehydration, hypotension, weakness, dizziness, and increased thirst.

Quick Suggestions:
  • Follow a healthy diet plan recommended by your healthcare provider.
  • Aim for at least 45 minutes of daily walking or other forms of physical activity.
  • Maintain a healthy weight through regular exercise.
  • Prioritize proper rest and sleep.
  • Incorporate stress-reducing activities such as meditation or yoga into your routine.
  • Continue taking Emjard 10mg Tablet even if you believe your blood sugar is well-controlled.
  • Do not compensate for missed doses by taking larger doses. Consult your doctor for advice.
  • Consume short, frequent meals throughout the day.
  • Avoid prolonged fasting when using Emjard 10mg Tablet.
  • Be vigilant for symptoms of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), such as sweating, dizziness, palpitations, shivering, intense thirst, dry mouth, dry skin, or frequent urination.
  • In case of hypoglycemia symptoms, take immediate action: consume 5-6 candies, three glucose biscuits, or three teaspoons of honey/sugar, and contact your physician.
Indications:
  • Empagliflozin is used to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus as a supplement to diet and exercise.
  • In adult patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and established cardiovascular disease, the goal is to lower the risk of cardiovascular death.
Pharmacology
  • Empagliflozin is a sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitor.
  • SGLT2 co-transporters are responsible for the reabsorption of glucose from the glomerular filtrate in the kidney.
  • Empagliflozin reduces renal absorption and lowers the renal threshold for glucose, resulting in increased glucose excretion.
  • It contributes to reduced hyperglycemia, weight loss, and decreased blood pressure.
Dosage & Administration of Emjard 10mg Tablet
  • Empagliflozin is prescribed at a dose of 10 mg once daily, with or without food, in the morning.
  • The dose can be increased to 25 mg once daily in patients who tolerate it well.
  • Correct volume depletion before starting Empagliflozin in patients with this condition.
Interaction
  • Diuretics: Co-administration of Empagliflozin with diuretics results in increased urine volume.
  • Insulin or Sulfonylurea Secretagogues: Co-administration of Empagliflozin with insulin or sulfonylurea secretagogues increases the risk of hypoglycemia.
  • Positive Urine Glucose Test: Monitoring glycemic control with urine glucose tests is not recommended in patients taking SGLT2 inhibitors, as it may lead to false-positive results.
  • Interference with 1,5-Anhydroglucitol (1,5-AG) Test: Monitoring glycemic control with the 1,5-AG test is not recommended, as measurements of 1,5-AG are unreliable in assessing glycemic control in patients taking SGLT2 inhibitors.
Contraindications

Patients with a history of serious hypersensitivity reactions to Empagliflozin or any of its ingredients, severe renal impairment, end-stage renal disease, or dialysis should not take Empagliflozin.

Pregnancy & Lactation
  • Empagliflozin has not been sufficiently studied in pregnant women. Its use during pregnancy should only be considered if the potential benefit outweighs the risk to the fetus.
  • Empagliflozin is not known to be excreted in human milk. Its use is not recommended during breastfeeding.
Precautions & Warnings
  • Renal function should be checked before starting Empagliflozin and periodically thereafter.
  • Patients with an eGFR (estimated glomerular filtration rate) of less than 45 ml/min/1.73 m2 should not start Empagliflozin.
  • Patients with an eGFR greater than or equal to 45 ml/min/1.73 m2 do not require dose adjustments.
