• Reduces triglyceride and cholesterol levels in the body.

Side Effects of Ridel ER 500mg

Common side effects include itching, flushing (warmth in the face, ears, neck, and trunk), erythema (skin redness), and tingling.

Quick Suggestions:

• Known to increase "good" cholesterol (HDL), preventing heart attack and stroke.
• Take with food to avoid an upset stomach.
• Avoid alcohol, spicy foods, hot beverages, or hot baths before taking.
• May cause skin warmth; your doctor may recommend taking aspirin 30 minutes before to reduce this effect.
• Notify your doctor if you experience unexplained muscle pain.

Indications of Ridel ER 500mg

• Treatment of conditions caused by low levels of vitamin B3.
• Helps in maintaining normal cholesterol levels.
• Addresses symptoms like loss of appetite, weakness, diarrhea, skin inflammation, and mental changes.

Pharmacology

• Nicotinic acid, a derivative of vitamin B3, is incorporated into coenzymes involved in cellular metabolic pathways.
• Reduces total serum cholesterol, LDL, VLDL, and triglycerides, and increases HDL cholesterol.

Dosage & Administration of Ridel ER 500mg

Adult Dose:

Oral Treatment and Prophylaxis of Nicotinic Acid Deficiency:

• For treatment of pellagra: 300-500 mg daily in divided doses.
• For management of Hartnup disease: 50-200 mg daily.

Hyperlipidaemias:

• Initially, 250 mg once daily in the evening.
• Increase dose every 4-7 days until desired LDL cholesterol and/or triglyceride level is achieved or the dose of 1.5-2 g/day is reached.
• If hyperlipidemia is not adequately controlled after 2 months with this dose, it can be increased at 2- to 4-week intervals to 1 g tid.
• Max: 6 g daily.

As Extended-Release Tablet:

• Initially, 500 mg/day PO at bedtime initially.
• The dose is adjusted every 4 weeks based on effect and tolerance to a therapeutic dose of 1-2 g once daily.
• Not to exceed 1-2 g/day.

Vasodilation:

• Adult: 100-150 mg 3-5 times daily.

As Extended-Release Tablet for Vasodilation:

• 300-400 mg 12 hrly.

Child Dose:

Oral Treatment and Prophylaxis of Nicotinic Acid Deficiency:

• For treatment of pellagra: 100-300 mg daily in divided doses.

Take the medicine as advised by your doctor. Swallow it whole; do not chew, crush, or break. Can be taken with or without food, but taking it at a fixed time is preferable.

Interaction

• Increased risk of myopathy with concomitant HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors.
• Reduced bioavailability with colestyramine or colestipol.
• Decreased metabolic clearance with aspirin.
• May potentiate the effects of certain drugs, resulting in postural hypotension.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in known hypersensitivity, significant hepatic dysfunction, active peptic ulcer disease, or arterial bleeding.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Niacin cannot be used in pregnancy and lactation because of a lack of information.
