✔️ Composition

• Ferrous Sulfate BP: 150 mg (equivalent to 47 mg elemental Iron)
• Folic Acid BP: 500 mcg
• Zinc Sulphate Monohydrate USP: 61.8 mg (equivalent to 22.5 mg elemental Zinc)

✔️ Dosage & Administration

Adults & Elderly: 1 capsule daily; in severe cases, 2 capsules daily may be required.

Children (over 1 year): 1 capsule daily. The capsule may be opened, and pellets mixed with soft, cool food; do not chew.

✔️ Overdose Effects

Iron overdose is particularly dangerous in children:

• Early intervention: Gastric lavage or induced vomiting
• Administer oral desferrioxamine (2 g for child, 5 g for adult)
• If serum iron is high or patient is in shock/coma, IV desferrioxamine should be used

Zinc overdose: Corrosive effects can cause severe GI irritation, hemorrhage, and mucosal damage

• Avoid gastric lavage or emesis
• Administer demulcents such as milk
• Chelating agents (Dimercaprol, Penicillamine, Edetic Acid) may be used
• Timed-release capsules may slow absorption, allowing time for intervention

✔️ Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to any component of the product

Patients with iron overload conditions

✔️ Side Effects

Dark stools (normal with iron therapy), nausea, gastrointestinal discomfort, anorexia, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea

Zinc-specific: May cause mild GI upset

Rare: Allergic reactions

Timed-release formulation helps minimize gastrointestinal irritation

✔️ Pregnancy & Lactation

Avoid use in the first trimester unless there is confirmed iron deficiency

Zinc and Folic Acid supplementation is justified for the remainder of pregnancy if dietary intake is inadequate

✔️ Precautions & Warnings

• Monitor patients at risk of iron overload, such as those with hemochromatosis, hemolytic anemia, or red cell aplasia
• Lack of response may indicate other causes of anemia and warrants further investigation
• Drug interactions:
• Iron and Zinc may chelate with tetracyclines, reducing absorption
• Zinc absorption may be reduced by concurrent Iron
• Iron absorption may be impaired by penicillamine or antacids
• Separate administration of interacting drugs by several hours to reduce interactions
• Patients with renal failure may be at risk of Zinc accumulation
