Quick Suggestions:
  • Spicy, salty, and high-sugar foods can aggravate mouth ulcers. It is recommended to avoid them during the healing process.
  • Ensure you have a well-balanced diet that includes multivitamins, especially B12, folate, zinc, and iron. These nutrients can support the healing process.
  • Brush your teeth after meals and floss regularly to keep your mouth clean and prevent further irritation.
  • Rinsing your mouth with salt water can provide relief and promote the healing of mouth ulcers.
  • Numbing the area with ice or sucking on ice chips can help alleviate pain temporarily.
  • Smoking can further irritate mouth ulcers and delay the healing process. Quitting smoking is recommended.
  • Apply Amlexanox as prescribed by your doctor, typically after brushing and flossing post meals and at bedtime. Avoid direct contact with the eyes, and if accidental contact occurs, wash the eyes with water.
Indication of Apsol Oral Paste

Amlexanox is indicated for the treatment of aphthous ulcers in people with normal immune systems.

Pharmacology

The exact mechanism by which Amlexanox accelerates the healing of aphthous ulcers is not fully understood. In vitro studies have shown that Amlexanox is a potent inhibitor of the formation and release of inflammatory mediators, such as histamine and leukotrienes, from various immune cells including mast cells, neutrophils, and mononuclear cells. When administered orally to animals, Amlexanox has demonstrated anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory effects and has been shown to suppress both immediate and delayed hypersensitivity reactions. However, the specific relevance of these activities of Amlexanox to its effects on aphthous ulcers has not been established. Further research is needed to fully understand the mechanism of action of Amlexanox in promoting the healing of aphthous ulcers.

Interaction

There is a potential interaction between monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or related antidepressants. MAOIs and SSRIs work on different neurotransmitters in the brain, and when taken together or in close proximity, they can lead to a potentially dangerous condition known as serotonin syndrome.

To prevent serotonin syndrome, it is generally recommended to allow a washout period between discontinuing an MAOI and starting an SSRI or related antidepressant. This washout period is typically two weeks for SSRIs and related antidepressants before starting an MAOI. Conversely, it is recommended to wait at least one week (or longer, depending on the specific medication) after discontinuing an SSRI or related antidepressant before starting an MAOI.

The washout period helps ensure that the previous medication has been cleared from the body and reduces the risk of serotonin syndrome. However, it's essential to follow the specific recommendations of a healthcare professional and carefully consider individual circumstances, as the timing may vary depending on the specific medications involved.

Serotonin syndrome is a potentially life-threatening condition characterized by symptoms such as agitation, confusion, rapid heartbeat, high blood pressure, dilated pupils, and tremors, and in severe cases, it can lead to seizures or loss of consciousness. If someone experiences these symptoms, they should seek immediate medical attention.

It's important to always consult with a healthcare professional or pharmacist for specific guidance and recommendations regarding medication interactions, including MAOIs and SSRIs or related antidepressants.
