Ocubil refers to the European bilberry, a fruit long valued for its medicinal properties. The extract is standardized, typically to 25% anthocyanidins (about 37% by weight anthocyanosides), which are responsible for its therapeutic activity.
The medicinal components include dried leaves, ripe dried fruit, and fresh ripe fruit. Bilberry naturally contains tannins, anthocyanins, and flavonoid glycosides, making it effective in supporting eye health and vascular function.
The plant is native to Central & Northern Europe, Asia, and North America.
Bilberry extract is widely used in ocular and vascular conditions due to its anthocyanins, which help regenerate rhodopsin, an essential pigment for night vision.
It is beneficial in retinopathy, cataracts, macular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa, and microcirculatory disorders (e.g., varicose veins, venous insufficiency, atherosclerosis).
Inhibits collagen degradation by blocking leukocyte-secreted enzymes during inflammation
Protects retina by inhibiting retinal phosphoglucomutase & glucose-6-phosphatase
Reduces microvascular damage from ischemia-reperfusion injury (preserves endothelium, improves capillary perfusion, and reduces leukocyte adhesion)
Antiplatelet activity: Dose-dependent inhibition of platelet aggregation & clot retraction
Protects the blood-brain barrier (BBB): Decreases collagen hydrolysis, reduces permeability, and enhances recovery of the BBB
No known adverse effects at recommended doses
Recommended dose: 160 mg capsule, 2–3 times daily, or as advised by a physician
Swallow with water; consistent use is important for the therapeutic effect
Generally safe with no significant interactions
Very high doses (>170 mg anthocyanins daily for 30–60 days) may potentiate the effects of warfarin or other antiplatelet medications
No restrictions reported; considered safe when taken as directed
Store below 30°C, in a cool, dry place
Protect from direct sunlight
Keep out of reach of children
