It helps develop immunity by forming antibodies, which are proteins that protect against infection caused by viruses.

  • Prophylactic Immunization:

    • For infants and others at high risk of rabies.
  • Post-exposure Immunization:
    • For those bitten by or in contact with rabid or potentially rabid animals.
Pharmacology

Rabies Vaccine is a freeze-dried preparation of inactivated rabies virus produced on Vero cells. After reconstitution, it is a clear, colorless sterile solution for intramuscular use.

Dosage & Administration:
  • Reconstitution:
    • Mix the supplied diluent with the freeze-dried preparation without shaking.
    • Ensure the solution is clear and free of particles.
    • Inject immediately and discard the syringe after use.
  • Administration:
    • Inject 1 ml intramuscularly into the deltoid muscle for adults or the anterolateral thigh muscle for children under 1 year.
    • Do not inject into the gluteal region or intravenously.

Pre-exposure Immunization:

  • Primary Vaccination: 1 ml IM on days 0, 7, 21, or 28, followed by a booster after one year.
  • Boosters: Every 5 years or when antibody titer is below 0.5 IU/ml.

Post-exposure Immunization:

  • Wound Treatment: Wash thoroughly with soap and water, disinfect, and avoid bandaging or suturing.
  • Vaccination for Non-immunized Subjects:
    • Standard IM Regimen: 1 ml on days 0, 3, 7, 14, and 28.
    • Abbreviated Multisite Regimen: 2 injections of 1 ml each on day 0, 1 ml on day 7, and 1 ml on day 21.
  • Severe Wounds: Administer rabies immunoglobulin with the first vaccine dose.
  • Vaccination for Previously Immunized Subjects:
    • If bitten within 1 year of previous full vaccination: 1 ml on days 0 and 3.
    • If bitten after 1 year: complete post-exposure immunization.

Administration Considerations:

  • Avoid using the same syringe and injection site for the vaccine and immunoglobulin.
  • Co-administration: Corticosteroids and immunosuppressants may reduce vaccine efficacy; monitor antibody levels.
