Alfacon enhances protein metabolism by using amino acid catabolic pathways. By supplying essential amino acids without excess nitrogen, it supports renal function while reducing urea production and metabolic stress in patients with impaired kidney function.
Alfacon® is a specialized nutritional supplement containing essential amino acids, partially provided as their corresponding keto-analogues, developed for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). It supports protein metabolism while minimizing nitrogen intake, helping to protect kidney function.
The keto- and hydroxy-analogues follow the same metabolic pathways as amino acids. In the body, they are converted into essential amino acids by utilizing nitrogen from non-essential amino acids. This process reduces urea formation through nitrogen recycling, thereby lowering the metabolic burden on the kidneys and improving nutrient absorption.

Adult Dose
4–8 tablets, three times daily, taken during meals
Dose is based on adults weighing approximately 70 kg
Child Dose
As prescribed by the physician
Renal Dose
Recommended when GFR is between 5 and 25 mL/min
Administration Instructions
Tablets should be swallowed whole; do not chew
Must be taken with meals for optimal absorption and metabolism
Dietary protein intake should not exceed 40 g/day (adults)
✔️ Side Effects
Hypercalcemia (very rare)
If hypercalcemia occurs, reduce vitamin D intake
Decrease the dose of Alfacon and other calcium-containing products if the condition persists
✔️ Interaction
Dose reduction is required when used with aluminum hydroxide
Avoid concurrent use with drugs that form poorly soluble complexes with calcium, including:
Tetracyclines
Quinolones (e.g., ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin)
Iron, fluoride, or estramustine-containing medicines
Maintain a minimum 2-hour gap between Alfacon and these medications
Concomitant calcium-containing drugs may increase serum calcium levels

- Disorders of amino acid metabolism
- Hypercalcemia

Use during pregnancy has not been adequately studied
Animal studies show no direct or indirect harmful effects on pregnancy or fetal development
Should be used during pregnancy only if clearly necessary
No clinical experience is available for use during breastfeeding

Regular monitoring of serum calcium levels is essential
Ensure adequate calorie intake during therapy
Contains phenylalanine—use with caution in patients with phenylketonuria
When used with aluminum hydroxide, serum phosphate levels should be monitored
