How does Lonazep 2mg Tablet work?

It works by increasing the action of a chemical messenger (GABA) which suppresses the abnormal and excessive activity of the nerve cells in the brain.

Side Effects of Lonazep 2mg Tablet

Common adverse effects include CNS depression, drowsiness, ataxia, behavior issues, aphonia, coma, tremor, vertigo, disorientation, sadness, amnesia, hallucinations, hysteria, increased libido, sleeplessness, psychosis, and palpitations.

• The addiction / habit-forming potential of this medicine is very high. Take it only as per the dose and duration advised by your doctor
• It may cause dizziness. Do not drive or do anything that requires mental focus until you know how this medicine affects you.
• Avoid consuming alcohol as it may increase dizziness and drowsiness.
• Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to conceive, or breastfeeding.
• Inform your doctor if you experience worsened anxiety, depression anger, or violent behavior and mania while taking this medicine.
• Do not stop taking medication suddenly without talking to your doctor as that may lead to nausea, anxiety, agitation, flu-like symptoms, sweating, tremors, and confusion.

Indications of Lonazep 2mg Tablet

1. Treatment of panic disorder, with or without agoraphobia, characterized by unexpected panic attacks and fear of further attacks.
2. Management of Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome (petit mal form), akinetic seizures, and myoclonic seizures, either alone or in combination.
3. Treatment of absence seizures (petit mal) in patients unresponsive to succinimides.

Pharmacology

• Clonazepam has benzodiazepine-like features, including anticonvulsive, sedative, muscle relaxant, and anxiolytic actions.
• Mediates central effects by increasing GABAergic neurotransmission, resulting in greater action of released GABA on the postsynaptic transmembrane chloride ion flow.
• Suppresses various types of paroxysmal activity in animals and is effective in both widespread and focal epilepsies.

Dosage & Administration of Lonazep 2mg Tablet

Oral:

• Adults: Initial dose for seizure disorders not to exceed 1.5 mg/day, maintenance dosage individualized.
• Adults with panic disorder: Initial dose 0.25 mg, increase to 1 mg/day after 3 days.
• Pediatric Patients: Initial dose for infants and children should be between 0.01 and 0.03 mg/kg/day, not to exceed 0.05 mg/kg/day.

Interaction

• Phenytoin, carbamazepine, and phenobarbital pharmacokinetics do not appear to be affected.
• The impact on the metabolism of other medications has not been studied.

Contraindications

• History of benzodiazepine hypersensitivity.
• Clinical or biochemical signs of substantial liver disease.
• Not recommended for acute narrow-angle glaucoma.

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Clonazepam has the potential to cause congenital abnormalities.
• Breastfeeding is not recommended unless there is a compelling need.

Precaution & Warnings:

Generalized Tonic-Clonic Seizures:

• Clonazepam may increase the incidence or hasten the beginning of generalized tonic-clonic seizures in patients with multiple distinct forms of seizure disorders.
• This effect might necessitate the addition of or an increase in the dosage of other anticonvulsant medications.

Interaction with Valproic Acid:

• Concurrent use of valproic acid and Clonazepam can lead to absent status.
• This indicates that combining these medications may result in a state of absent seizures or epileptic status, which is a prolonged seizure activity that may require emergency medical attention.
