A-Cal is used for the treatment or prevention of calcium depletion in various conditions, including:
- Calcium Deficiency: Hypoparathyroidism, vitamin D deficiency, pregnancy and lactation, menopause, chronic diarrhea, renal failure, etc.
- Hyperphosphatemia: Particularly in patients with chronic renal failure or on dialysis (CAPD and hemodialysis).
- Gastrointestinal Issues: Provides short-term relief from dyspepsia but is not recommended for long-term treatment of peptic ulcers.
- Calcium carbonate reacts with gastric acid to produce calcium chloride, water, and carbon dioxide, which raises gastric pH and decreases pepsin activity. Approximately 30% of oral calcium may be absorbed.

- 250 mg or 500 mg Tablets:
- As an Antacid: Adults: 540-2000 mg of calcium carbonate per day; children: half the adult dose.
- As a Dietary Supplement: 1250-3750 mg daily (500-1500 mg of elemental calcium) depending on individual needs.
- Pregnancy and Lactation: 1200-1500 mg daily.
- Chronic Renal Failure: 2.5-9.0 g daily, adjusted for individual needs.

- Cardiac Effects: May enhance the effects of digoxin and other cardiac glycosides if hypercalcemia occurs.
