Indications
Pharmacology
Due to its biochemical inactivity, dihydrofolate reductase transforms folic acid into tetrahydrofolic acid and methyltetrahydrofolate (DHFR). These folic acid congeners are transported by endocytosis throughout cells. They are necessary for maintaining healthy erythropoiesis, producing purine and thymidylate nucleic acids, converting amino acids, methylating tRNA, and producing and using formate. By remethylating homocysteine to methionine via methionine synthetase, which uses vitamin B12 as a cofactor, folic acid can reduce high homocysteine levels.
Dosage and Administration
Adults-
Children-
It may be taken with or without food.
Interaction
There have been no reports of any.
Contraindications
Folic acid is contraindicated in patients with previous intolerance to the drug.
Side effects
Folic acid is well tolerated by the majority of people. You may experience gastrointestinal issues. Only a few cases of hypersensitivity reactions have been observed.
Pregnancy & Lactation
There are no recognized specific precautions.
Precautions & Warnings
In patients with folate-dependent tumors, it should be used with caution. For the treatment of undetected megaloblastic anemia, it should never be given alone or in combination with insufficient levels of vitamin B12. Although folic acid can cause a hematopoietic response in patients with megaloblastic anemia caused by vitamin B12 deficiency, it should not be used alone in vitamin B12 insufficiency since it can cause subacute mixed cord degeneration. Before starting long-term folate therapy, a cobalamin absorption test should be performed in elderly adults. Short courses of folate had no negative effects.
Storage Conditions
Store at or below 30°C in a dry, dark area. Keep out of children's reach.
