Ferokid contains Sodium Feredetate, an iron chelate in which iron is bound to EDTA (Ethylenediaminetetraacetic Acid). Unlike conventional iron salts, the iron remains in a non-ionized form, reducing the likelihood of tooth staining and gastrointestinal irritation.
After ingestion, the iron complex is broken down in the gastrointestinal tract, releasing elemental iron for absorption. Once absorbed:
The EDTA component is minimally absorbed and is largely eliminated unchanged.

Preventive supplementation may be required for low-birth-weight infants who are exclusively breastfed. Supplementation is generally started 4–6 weeks after birth and continued until mixed feeding is established.
Iron should not be taken together with dimercaprol due to the risk of toxic compound formation. It may also reduce the blood pressure-lowering effect of methyldopa.
Iron supplements may cause the stool to become dark or black, which can affect certain tests used to detect hidden blood in the stool.
Excessive or prolonged use in children may lead to iron accumulation and toxicity.
