✔️ How does Prodep/Fluoxetine work?
Fluoxetine works by increasing the levels of a chemical substance in the brain called serotonin. This helps in reducing the symptoms by maintaining normal brain function. Thus, it helps to improve your mood and a feeling of well-being.
✔️ Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal: Nausea, vomiting, dyspepsia, dry mouth, diarrhea.
- Neurological: Anxiety, nervousness, insomnia, drowsiness, fatigue.
- Other: Excessive sweating, pruritus, and skin rashes associated with liver, kidney, and lung involvement. Discontinue therapy if a rash develops.
✔️ Dosage & Administration
- Initial Treatment: The recommended starting dose is 20 mg/day, taken in the morning. This dose may be increased after several weeks if there is no clinical improvement, but should not exceed 80 mg/day. Dosages above 20 mg/day should be split into two doses (morning and noon).
- Maintenance Treatment: For ongoing management of depressive illness, Fluoxetine may be taken at 60 mg/day. It is also commonly used at 60 mg/day for bulimia nervosa.
- Use in Children: The use of Fluoxetine in children is not recommended, as safety and efficacy have not been established.
- Renal & Hepatic Impairment: Lower or less frequent dosages may be necessary for patients with kidney or liver issues.

- MAO Inhibitors: Serious, sometimes fatal reactions may occur if used with MAOIs. Fluoxetine should not be combined with MAOIs or used within 14 days of stopping an MAOI. A 5-week wait is advised after discontinuing Fluoxetine before starting an MAOI.
- Antidepressants: Concurrent use with other antidepressants may increase their plasma levels.
- Lithium: Fluoxetine may increase or decrease lithium levels.
- Antipsychotics: May elevate blood levels of haloperidol and clozapine.
- Anticonvulsants: Can increase plasma levels of phenytoin and carbamazepine, leading to potential toxicity.
- CNS Active Drugs: Caution is advised with other centrally acting medications.
