✅ Description:
G-Cephalexin is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible organisms, including:
- Respiratory Tract Infections: Acute and chronic bronchitis, infected bronchiectasis.
- Genito-Urinary Tract Infections: Acute and chronic nephritis, cystitis, urethritis, prostatitis, and prophylaxis of recurrent urinary tract infections.
- Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: Infections caused by Staphylococci and/or Streptococci.
- Ear, Nose, and Throat Infections: Otitis media, mastoiditis, sinusitis, follicular tonsillitis, and pharyngitis.
- Bone Infections: Caused by Staphylococci and/or Proteus mirabilis.

✔️ Dosage & Administration
Adults:
- Usual dose: 250 mg to 500 mg every 6 hours.
- For skin and soft tissue infections, streptococcal pharyngitis, or uncomplicated cystitis (in patients >15 years): 500 mg every 12 hours.
- Severe or deep-seated infections: The dose can be increased from 3 g to 6 g daily.
Children:
- Dosage: 25-100 mg/kg/day divided into multiple doses, with a maximum of 4 g daily.
Children’s Weight-Based Dosing:
- 10 kg: 62.5-125 mg 4 times daily or 125-250 mg twice daily.
- 20 kg: 125-250 mg 4 times daily or 250-500 mg twice daily.
- 40 kg: 250-500 mg 4 times daily or 500 mg-1 g twice daily.
Specific Conditions:
- Streptococcal Pharyngitis, Skin, and Soft Tissue Infections: Administer every 12 hours for patients >1 year old.
- Otitis Media: Requires 75-100 mg/kg/day divided into 4 doses.
- Beta-Hemolytic Streptococcal Infections: Treatment should last at least 10 days.
✔️ Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy: Category B. Cephalexin can be used if deemed essential.
- Lactation: Cephalexin is excreted in breast milk; use with caution in nursing mothers.
✔️ Side Effects
Common side effects:
- Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort.
- Rarely: Pseudomembranous colitis, skin rash, angioedema, elevated serum aminotransferases, eosinophilia, neutropenia, and superinfection (e.g., Candida).
✔️ Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics.
✔️ Precautions & Warnings
- Use cautiously in patients with renal impairment; dosage adjustments may be necessary.
- Cephalexin may give false-positive results in urine glucose tests using copper reduction reagents and in Coombs' tests.
- Although no teratogenic effects were noted in animal studies, use only if essential during pregnancy.
