• Lithium carbonate is one of the most effective long-term treatments for bipolar disorder.

• Your lithium blood levels, thyroid function, and kidney function may be monitored as long as you take this medicine.
• It may cause diarrhea and dehydration. Drink plenty of water and use normal amounts of salt. Inform your doctor if you start or stop a low-salt diet.
• Monitor your weight during treatment as Lithium carbonate can cause weight gain.

✔️ Overdose Effects of Lithosun SR Tablet

In case of lithium overdose:

• Discontinue lithium immediately.
• Serum lithium levels should be monitored every six hours.
• Avoid using diuretics.
• Osmotic diuresis (mannitol or urea infusion) or alkalinization (sodium lactate or bicarbonate infusion) should be initiated.
• If serum lithium exceeds 4.0 mmol/L or the patient's condition worsens, prompt dialysis (peritoneal or hemodialysis) should be performed until lithium is cleared from serum or dialysis fluid. Continue monitoring for at least one week to address any rebound in serum lithium levels.

✔️ Pharmacology

Lithium's mechanism of action in treating bipolar disorder remains unclear despite over 50 years of clinical use. It is thought to work by inhibiting enzymes such as glycogen synthase kinase 3 and inositol phosphatases, or by modulating glutamate receptors. Lithium carbonate also affects the intraneuronal metabolism of catecholamines and alters sodium transport in neurons and muscle cells.

✔️ Dosage & Administration of Lithosun SR Tablet

• Adults and children over 12 years: Initial dose of 1 gm to 1.5 gm daily.
• Prophylaxis: Initial dose of 300-400 mg daily.
• Should be taken with food.

Renal Impairment: For patients with CrCl between 10-50 mL/min, 50-75% of the normal dose should be administered.
