✅ Description:
Glifo-M is a combination of Empagliflozin and Metformin, indicated for adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus as an adjunct to diet and exercise. It is used in patients whose blood sugar remains inadequately controlled with Metformin alone, in combination with other antidiabetic medicines, or in those already receiving Empagliflozin and Metformin as separate tablets.
Treatment should be individualized based on efficacy and tolerability. Glifo-M is generally taken twice daily with meals to minimize gastrointestinal side effects associated with Metformin. Dose adjustments should be made gradually.
- Patients switching from Metformin may start with a combination containing Empagliflozin 5 mg and a similar daily Metformin dose.
- Patients switching from Empagliflozin may start with Metformin 500 mg and the same Empagliflozin dose.
- Those already taking both medicines separately may switch to equivalent combination doses.
The maximum recommended daily dose is Empagliflozin 25 mg and Metformin 2000 mg.

Glifo-M is generally not recommended during pregnancy, particularly during the second and third trimesters. It is also not recommended while breastfeeding.
Empagliflozin overdose has not shown significant toxicity in clinical studies. Excessive Metformin intake may lead to lactic acidosis, a medical emergency requiring immediate hospital treatment. Hemodialysis can effectively remove Metformin and lactate from the body.
Regular monitoring of kidney function, blood glucose levels, and vitamin B12 status may be necessary during treatment.
Storage
✔️ Common adverse effects include:
- Urinary tract infections
- Genital fungal infections
- Increased urination
- Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, and flatulence
- Headache and weakness
- Increased thirst
- Skin rash or itching
Less common but serious effects may include:
- Volume depletion and low blood pressure
- Kidney function deterioration
- Diabetic ketoacidosis
- Lactic acidosis (rare but serious)
✔️ Glifo-M may interact with:
- Diuretics, increasing the risk of dehydration and low blood pressure.
- Insulin or insulin secretagogues, increasing the risk of hypoglycemia.
- Drugs that reduce Metformin clearance, such as cimetidine, dolutegravir, ranolazine, and vandetanib.
- Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, which may increase the risk of lactic acidosis.
- Medications that affect blood glucose control, including corticosteroids, thyroid hormones, oral contraceptives, calcium channel blockers, and certain anticonvulsants.
- Excessive alcohol consumption, which may increase the risk of lactic acidosis.
✔️ Glifo-M should not be used in patients with:
- Hypersensitivity to Empagliflozin or Metformin
- Diabetic ketoacidosis or diabetic pre-coma
- Severe renal impairment
- Conditions associated with reduced oxygen supply to tissues, such as severe heart failure, respiratory failure, or recent heart attack
- Severe liver disease
- Acute alcohol intoxication or chronic alcoholism
✔️ Special caution is required in patients with:
- Kidney impairment
- Low blood pressure or dehydration
- Risk factors for ketoacidosis
- Recurrent urinary tract or genital infections
- Vitamin B12 deficiency
