How does Nutridex 25% Infusion work?

Nutridex 25% Infusion is used when there is a considerable decrease in blood sugar and is hence, used to elevate blood glucose levels. The ingested glucose is directly absorbed by the blood thereby, causing a quick surge in the level of glucose in the blood.

• Dextrose 25% Infusion is used to provide your body with extra water and carbohydrates (calories from sugar). It is used when a patient is not able to drink enough liquids or when additional fluids are needed after any surgery or trauma.
• Dextrose 25% Infusion should be used with caution in patients with diabetes, hypokalemia (low potassium), peripheral edema (swelling in the arms, feet, or legs)
• or pulmonary edema (when fluids build up in the lungs).
• Your blood sugar level will be monitored regularly while taking Dextrose 25% Infusion.
• It is not recommended to administer Dextrose 25% Infusion simultaneously with blood products as it might cause hemolysis (rupture of red blood cells) or pseudo agglutination (misleading appearance of clumping of red blood cells).

Indication

Nutridex Infusion 250ml is a parenteral nutrition solution used for short-term fluid replacement and the treatment of conditions related to carbohydrate consumption and hypoglycemic coma. It contains dextrose, a monosaccharide that serves as a source of calories and hydration.

Pharmacology

• Dextrose in Nutridex Infusion 250ml provides calories and hydration.
• It helps reduce the loss of body protein and nitrogen.
• Dextrose promotes glycogen deposition in the liver.
• When used with insulin (affront), it enhances the uptake of potassium by cells, especially in muscle tissue, thereby reducing serum potassium levels.

Dosage & Administration of

• The volume and rate of infusion of dextrose solution should be determined based on individual patient requirements and physician judgment.
• The maximum rate at which dextrose can be infused without causing glycosuria (sugar in the urine) is 0.5 gm/kg/hr.
• The usual recommended flow rate for adults is 10-35 drops per minute when infused intravenously.
• It can be used in the treatment of hyperkalemia (high blood potassium levels) and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) in both adults and children, with specific dosage recommendations provided.

Interaction

If you ever have asthma, kidney or heart disease, head injury, stroke, diabetes, or coronary artery disease, inform your doctor before taking Dextrose 25% Injection 250ml.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Nutridex Infusion falls under Pregnancy Category C. Animal reproduction studies have shown adverse effects on the fetus, but there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans. Its use during pregnancy should be considered only if potential benefits outweigh potential risks.

If you are a breastfeeding mother, it's important to exercise caution when using Nutridex 250ml IV. It may be advised to temporarily stop breastfeeding until the medication is eliminated from your body. 

Precautions & Warnings

• This solution should not be administered rapidly or for an extended period.
• Caution should be exercised in patients with impaired hepatic or renal function and severe sepsis.
• Care should be taken to avoid circulatory overload, especially in patients with cardiac insufficiency.
• Patients receiving corticosteroids or corticotropin should be monitored closely when using this infusion.
• Nutridex Infusion should be used with caution in patients with diabetes mellitus.
• Visual inspection for particulate matter and discoloration should be done before administration.
• Do not administer unless the solution is clear, and the seal is intact.

Storage Conditions

Nutridex Infusion should be kept in a cool dry place and in its original packaging. Make sure this medication remains unreachable to children and pets.
