Indications

The following conditions are treated with ibuprofen:

• Rheumatoid arthritis is a type of arthritis that affects the joints.
• Osteoarthritis
• Gouty arthritis is a type of arthritis that affects the joints
• Polyarthritis in children and adolescents
• Ankylosing spondylitis is a type of arthritis that affects the spine.
• Synovitis
• Low back ache
• Dysmenorrhoea
• Fever
• Migraine
• Injuries to the soft tissues
• Pain and inflammation associated with dental and musculoskeletal issues.

Pharmacology

Anti-inflammatory, anti-pyretic, and analgesic action are all high in ibuprofen. Ibuprofen's analgesic effects are caused by both a peripheral and a central action. Ibuprofen inhibits the enzyme cyclooxygenase, which results in a significant decrease in prostaglandin synthesis. Some lipo-oxygenase products are likewise inhibited by ibuprofen. Ibuprofen lowers pain and stiffness, reduces swelling, and enhances the movement of arthritis sufferers' various joints.

Dosage & Administration

Adults: The dose is initially, 400 mg 3 times daily. A dose of 2400 mg daily should not be exceeded.

Children:

• 3-6 months (body-weight over 5 kg): ½ tsp (2.5 ml) 3 times daily; max. 30 mg/kg daily in 3-4 divided doses.
• 6 months-1 year: ½ tsp (2.5 ml) 3-4 times daily; max. 30 mg/kg daily in 3-4 divided doses.
• 1-4 years: 1 tsp (5 ml) 3 times daily; max. 30 mg/kg daily in 3-4 divided doses.
• 4-7 years: 1½ tsp (7.5 ml) 3 times daily; max. 30 mg/kg daily in 3-4 divided doses.
• 7-10 years: 2 tsp (10 ml) 3 times daily; upto 30 mg/kg (max. 2.4 gm) daily in 3-4 divided doses.
• 10-12 years: 3 tsp (15 ml) 3 times daily; upto 30 mg/kg (max. 2.4 gm) daily in 3-4 divided doses.
• children weighing less than 5 kg: Not recommended for children weighing less than 5 kg.
  
  In juvenile rheumatoid arthritis: up to 30-40 mg/kg of body weight daily in 3-4 divided doses may be taken or as directed by the physician.

Interaction

Warfarin, corticosteroids, SSRIs, and aspirin all increase the risk of GI bleeding. Diuretics' natriuretic effects may be reduced. ACE inhibitors and angiotensin II receptor antagonists have a reduced antihypertensive impact. Lithium with methotrexate toxicity may be increased. Cyclosporin and tacrolimus have been linked to an increase in nephrotoxicity.

Contraindications

Ibuprofen is not recommended for patients who have previously exhibited hypersensitivity to the drug, as well as those who have severe or active peptic ulcers.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Ibuprofen's negative effects on the growing fetus cannot be completely ruled out. Ibuprofen should not be taken during pregnancy or by nursing moms unless the advantages to the mothers exceed the hazards.

Precautions & Warnings

If you have a history of gastrointestinal hemorrhage or ulcer, you should use ibuprofen with caution and only the lowest effective doses. Patients taking Ibuprofen for a long time should have their eyes checked at regular intervals because alterations in ocular function have been recorded. Ibuprofen hypersensitivity is more common in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus than in others. In patients with asthma or a history of hypersensitivity to other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, ibuprofen should be used with caution.

Storage Conditions

All drugs should be kept out of the reach of youngsters. Store in a cold, dry, and light-protected location.
