How does Tofen work?

Tofen works by blocking the release of certain chemical messengers that may cause inflammation, spasms of muscles of the airways, and other symptoms of asthma and allergies.

Indications of Tofen:

• The prescription drug Tofen is used as a preventative measure against bronchial asthma and as therapy for allergy symptoms, including rhinitis and conjunctivitis.
• For reducing neurofibroma-related itching, discomfort, and tenderness problems. By lessening inflammation (swelling) in the lungs, it aids in lowering the frequency and intensity of asthma attacks.
• Tofen can be taken with or without food, however, the best results come from taking it simultaneously. It should be regarded as medical advice.

Pharmacology

Ketotifen is a medication with anti-allergic properties that has been used as a prophylactic treatment for asthma, similar to sodium chromoglycate. It also functions as an antihistamine. Ketotifen is known for its significant anti-anaphylactic properties and its effectiveness in preventing asthma attacks.

One of the key benefits of ketotifen is its sustained inhibitory effect on histamine reactions, which can be clearly distinguished from its anti-anaphylactic properties. Experimental studies in individuals with asthma have demonstrated that ketotifen, when taken orally, is as effective as selective mast cell stabilizers administered via inhalation. In contrast, antihistamines were not found to be effective in these tests.

Long-term clinical trials have investigated the effectiveness of ketotifen, and they have shown a reduction in the frequency, severity, and duration of asthma attacks. In some cases, patients experienced complete freedom from asthma attacks. Furthermore, it was possible to gradually decrease the use of corticosteroids and/or bronchodilators in some patients.

It is important to note that the prophylactic activity of ketotifen may take several weeks to fully establish. Ketotifen is not intended to abort established asthma attacks but rather to prevent them from occurring.

Dosage & Administration of Tofen:

Tofen Syrup Dosage:

• Adults: Take 1 mg (1 tablet or 1 teaspoonful) of ketotifen twice daily with food. In severe cases, the dose may be doubled. If drowsiness is likely to be a problem, a lower dose of 0.5 mg to 1 mg at night may be preferable for the first few days of treatment.
• Children (6 months to 3 years): Administer 0.05 mg (0.25 ml of syrup) per kilogram of body weight twice daily.
• Elderly: Use the same dosage as adults or as advised by the physician.

Interaction of Tofen:

Sedatives, hypnotics, antihistamines, and alcohol may be enhanced by Tofen 100 ml. A reversible decrease in platelet count has been observed in a few patients receiving Tofen concurrently with oral antidiabetic agents, suggesting that this combination should be avoided.

Contraindications of Tofen:

Pregnancy & Lactation

Although there is no evidence of any teratogenic effect, Ketotifen in pregnancy and lactation is not recommended.

Precautions & Warnings

• It is crucial to continue the prescribed treatment with ketotifen for at least two weeks after starting the medication in order to prevent the possibility of worsening asthma symptoms. This is particularly important for patients who are dependent on systemic corticosteroids or ACTH, as they may experience adrenal insufficiency if the treatment is discontinued abruptly.
• If a concurrent infection occurs while taking ketotifen, it is necessary to supplement the treatment with a specific antibiotic, as ketotifen alone does not possess antibacterial properties.
• During the initial day of ketotifen treatment, the individual's response may be affected, and it is advised that patients avoid operating vehicles or machinery until they are familiar with how the medication affects them.
• Patients should be cautioned against consuming alcohol while taking ketotifen, as it can enhance the effects of tranquilizers, hypnotics, antihistamines, and alcohol itself. It is important to discuss any concerns or potential interactions with your healthcare professional to ensure the safe and effective use of ketotifen.
