How does Cefotil Plus 500 Tablet work?

Cefotil Plus 500 Tablet is a combination of cefuroxime and clavulanic acid. Cefuroxime works by preventing the formation of bacterial cell walls, thereby stopping the infection to spread. Indication of Cefotil Plus 500 Tablet

Cefotil Plus 500 Tablet is used for the treatment of various bacterial infections such as:

• Pharyngitis and/or tonsillitis
• Acute bacterial otitis media
• Acute bacterial maxillary sinusitis
• Lower respiratory tract infections including pneumonia
• Acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis and secondary bacterial infections of acute bronchitis
• Skin and skin structure infections
• Urinary tract infections
• Bone and joint infections
• Gonorrhoea (uncomplicated and disseminated gonococcal infections)
• Early Lyme disease (erythema migrans)
• Septicemia
• Meningitis
• Switch therapy (injectable to oral) after surgery when the patient’s condition is improved

Pharmacology

Cefuroxime, the active ingredient in Cefotil Plus 500 Tablet, binds to one or more penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) in bacterial cells. This binding inhibits the final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis in the bacterial cell wall. Peptidoglycan is an essential component of the bacterial cell wall, and its synthesis is necessary for bacterial cell growth and division.

By inhibiting peptidoglycan synthesis, Cefuroxime disrupts the assembly of the bacterial cell wall, leading to cell wall defects and ultimately bacterial cell death.

Clavulanic acid, another component in Cefotil Plus 500 Tablet, acts as a beta-lactamase inhibitor. Beta-lactamase is an enzyme produced by certain bacteria that can inactivate antibiotics such as Cefuroxime by hydrolyzing their beta-lactam ring, rendering them ineffective against the bacteria.

Adult Dose:

• Pharyngitis or Tonsillitis: 250 mg twice daily for 5-10 days
• Acute bacterial maxillary sinusitis: 250 mg twice daily for 10 days
• Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis: 250-500 mg twice daily for 10 days
• Secondary bacterial infections of acute bronchitis: 250-500 mg twice daily for 5-10 days
• Community-acquired pneumonia: 250-500 mg twice daily for 5-10 days
• Uncomplicated skin and skin-structure infections: 250-500 mg twice daily for 10 days
• MDR Typhoid fever: 500 mg twice daily for 10-14 days
• Uncomplicated urinary tract infection: 250 mg twice daily for 7-10 days
• Uncomplicated gonorrhea: 1000 mg as a single dose
• Lyme disease: 500 mg twice daily for 20 days

Child Dose (3 months to 12 years):

• Pharyngitis or Tonsillitis: 20 mg/kg/day in two divided doses for 5-10 days
• Acute otitis media: 30 mg/kg/day in two divided doses for 10 days
• Acute bacterial maxillary sinusitis: 30 mg/kg/day in two divided doses for 10 days
• Community-acquired pneumonia: 30 mg/kg/day in two divided doses for 5-10 days
• MDR Typhoid fever: 30 mg/kg/day in two divided doses for 10-14 days
• Uncomplicated skin and skin-structure infections: 30 mg/kg/day in two divided doses for 10 days
• Uncomplicated urinary tract infection: 20 mg/kg/day in two divided doses for 7-10 days

Interaction
