While long-term clinical trials are lacking, there is no strong evidence supporting the use of DHEA/S for improving cognitive function, physical strength in elderly patients, postmenopausal symptoms, hyperlipidemia, insulin resistance, schizophrenia, or cancer. However, DHEA/S supplementation may be beneficial for women with diminished ovarian reserves, elderly women with osteoporosis, and individuals with mild systemic lupus erythematosus. It is recommended as a third-line treatment for major depressive disorder (MDD) by the Canadian Network for Mood and Anxiety Treatments (CANMAT), and limited data is suggesting it may also serve as an anxiolytic.
DHEA is generally well-tolerated in adrenal insufficiency studies, but long-term data are limited. Possible side effects include:
The sulfate derivative of DHEA acts as a noncompetitive antagonist of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors and a positive allosteric modulator of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors. In humans, DHEA exhibits neuroprotective, antioxidant, antihypertensive, and anti-inflammatory effects. Serum DHEA levels peak between 60 to 480 minutes after administration.
Note: Always follow the doctor's prescribed dosage.
High serum DHEAS levels from DHEA supplementation can interfere with progesterone assays, leading to false-positive serum progesterone results.
DHEA use is not recommended for individuals with breast or prostate cancer.
There is insufficient information on the safety and efficacy of DHEA in pregnancy and lactation. DHEA has been evaluated for improving oocyte production in infertility treatments.
