How does Ostimet 500mg Tablet work?

• Calcium carbonate can neutralize gastric acid rapidly and effectively.
• Adversely activates Ca-dependent processes, leading to the secretion of gastric and hydrochloric acid.
• Can induce rebound acid secretion.
• Prolonged high doses may cause hypercalcemia, alkalosis, and milk-alkali syndrome.

• Calcium Carbonate helps treat calcium deficiency.
• Do not take it within 1-2 hours of taking other medicines. Calcium may decrease the absorption of the other medicines.
• Do not take it within 2 hours of eating foods rich in oxalic acid (e.g. spinach), phosphate (e.g. bran), or phytic acid (e.g. whole cereals).
• Inform your doctor if you have problems with your kidneys.

Indication of Ostimet 500mg Tablet

• Tablets of 250 mg or 500 mg are typically used to treat or prevent calcium exhaustion.
• Conditions associated with calcium deficiency: Hypoparathyroidism, achlorhydria, persistent loose stools, vitamin D deficiency, steatorrhea, sprue, pregnancy, lactation, menopause, pancreatitis, renal failure, alkalosis, and hyperphosphatasemia.
• Hyperphosphatasemia in patients with chronic renal failure, undergoing hemodialysis, and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD).
• Acid indigestion, heartburn, sour stomach, upset stomach, and symptoms associated with hyperlipidemia.

Pharmacology

• Calcium carbonate reacts with stomach acid to produce salt and water.
• Chemical equation: CaCO3 + 2HCl = CaCl2 + H2O + CO2.
• Increases pH in the stomach, reducing pepsin's ability to inhibit gastric secretion.
• About 30% of orally taken calcium may be absorbed.

Dosage & Administration of Ostimet 500mg Tablet

• Adults: 540–2000 mg of calcium carbonate per day.
• Children: Half the adult dose.
• For osteoporosis prevention: 1250-3750 mg Calcium Carbonate (500-1500 mg calcium) daily.
• Pregnancy or nursing women: 1200–1500 mg.
• Chronic renal failure: Dosages range from 2.5 to 9.0 grams per day, administered with meals.
• For symptom relief: Start with a 1000 mg tablet followed by a 2000–3000 mg tablet. Repeat hourly if necessary.

Interaction

• May enhance the cardiac effects of digoxin.
• Interferes with the absorption of concomitant tetracycline formulations.
• May require modification of vitamin D therapy in chronic renal failure.

Contraindications

• Hypercalcemia and hyperparathyroidism.
• Hypercalciuria and nephrolithiasis in Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
