Procyclidine hydrochloride is an antimuscarinic drug for Parkinson's disease with relatively low toxicity. It is a synthetic tertiary amine. This drug exerts its anti-Parkinson's effect by correcting relative cholinergic excess, which is believed to be caused by dopamine deficiency. Quickly disappeared from G.I. and the organization. After intravenous administration, it takes effect in 5-20 minutes and lasts up to 4 hours.
Tablet:
Injection: By intramuscular or intravenous injection, 5-10 mg, repeated if necessary after 20 minutes; maximum 20 mg daily can be given.
Phenothiazines, anticonvulsants, levodopa, ketoconazole, monoamine oxidase inhibitors, adsorbent, antidiarrhoeals, alcohol, anticholinergic drugs.
Tardive dyskinesia and the patients those are hypersensitive to Procyclidine.
Dryness of mouth, blurring of vision, giddiness, gastro-intestinal disturbances (nausea, vomiting, epigastriac distress, constipation), allergic reaction (e.g. rash) or muscular weakness may occasionally occur. High doses may cause vertigo and possible confusion and hallucination; Side eects may usually be minimized by adjustment of dosage and administration after meal.
No data is advisable on the safe use of this drug in pregnancy and lactation.
It should be given with caution in children & geriatric patients. It is advisable to be cautious in giving Procyclidine to patients with diarrhea and cardiovascular diseases, glaucoma, urinary retention, hepatic or renal impairment.
