Indications
Indicated for the treatment of knee, hip, spine, and other osteoarthritis. Also referred to as a dietary supplement.
Pharmacology
Glucosamine is a naturally occurring chemical that helps the body produce joint lubricants and shock absorbers, which are required to maintain healthy cartilage and joint function. Glucosamine hydrochloride is a glucosamine prodrug that is well absorbed after oral administration and diffuses into a variety of tissues, including bones and articular cartilages. Glucosamine is the active component in the treatment of osteoarthritis. The delivery vehicle is the hydrochloride acid salt. After it enters the stomach, the salt's role is done, and it is the glucosamine that is released to fulfill its purpose.
Glucosamine has been identified as the first anti-osteoarthritic medication that cures both the signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis and alters disease progression. It has the same efficacy as NSAIDs but far greater tolerability and clinical compliance.
Dosage & Administration
500 mg tablet three times daily or as directed by the physician. A single dose of 1500 mg daily may also be effective. Obese individuals may need higher doses, based on body weight.
Interaction
There have been no reports of significant Glucosamine medication interactions with antibiotics, antidepressants, antihypertensives, nitrates, antiarrhythmics, anxiolytics, hypoglycemic drugs, or anti-secretives.
Contraindications
Glucosamine has no recognized contraindications. However, Glucosamine hypersensitivity is a contraindication.
Side Effects
There is no evidence of toxicity in Glucosamine safety trials. Rarely occurring adverse effects, such as mild and reversible intestinal flatulence, are essentially identical to placebo.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not use glucosamine supplements. The effects of glucosamine on a growing fetus have not been thoroughly investigated. Furthermore, no studies have been conducted to assess the usage of Glucosamine during pregnancy or breastfeeding. During pregnancy and nursing, it should be used with caution and under the supervision of a doctor.
Precautions & Warnings
Diabetics should keep a close eye on their blood glucose levels when using Glucosamine. There were no particular investigations in individuals with renal and/or hepatic impairment. The product's toxicological and pharmacokinetic profile does not reveal any restrictions for these individuals. However, administration to these individuals with severe hepatic or renal impairment should be done under the guidance of a doctor.
