Pharmacology of Algin 50:

Tiemonium methyl sulfate is a medication classified as a quaternary ammonium antimuscarinic agent. It shares similarities with atropine in terms of its peripheral effects.

One of the primary mechanisms of action of tiemonium methyl sulfate is its ability to strengthen the binding of calcium with phospholipids and proteins. By doing so, it stabilizes the cell membrane of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract.

The stabilization of the cell membrane helps in reducing the excessive contraction of smooth muscles in the GI tract, particularly in conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). By exerting its antimuscarinic effects, tiemonium methylsulfate can help relieve symptoms associated with increased GI motility, such as abdominal cramping and spasms.

Dosage & Administration of Algin 50:

Tablet/Syrup-

• Adult: the usual dose is 2-6 tablets or 3-9 teaspoonfuls of syrup daily in divided doses.
• Children: 3 ml/kg or 6 mg/kg body weight daily in divided doses.

Interaction of Algin 50:

Algin 50 tablet should not be used with other drugs without the prior consultation of a registered physician to avoid possible drug interaction.

Contraindications

Algin 50 should not be used in urethroprostatic disorder involving a risk of urine retention. It is contraindicated in patients with the risk of angle closure glaucoma.

Pregnancy & Lactation:

The results of animal studies of Tiemonium Methylsulphate did not reveal any teratogenic effects; no deformities have been reported up till now with normal use. In absence of sufficient data, prudence should be the rule for nursing mothers although no problems have been reported with normal use.
