Side Effects of Zox Suspension

The most frequent side effects, reported by Nitazoxanide are abdominal pain, vomiting and headache. These side effects are typically mild and transient in nature. Very rare side effects include- nausea, anorexia, flatulence, increased appetite, enlarged salivary glands, increased creatinine & SGPT level, pruritus, rhinitis, sweating, dizziness, discolored urine etc.

How does Zox Suspension

Zox Suspension interferes with the energy production of the parasites/protozoa and prevents their growth which causes diarrhea. 

Indications

The antibiotic nitazoxanide is used to treat Cryptosporidium parvum, Giardia lamblia, and Entamoeba histolytica diarrhea..

Pharmacology

Nitazoxanide is a synthetic antiprotozoal drug that is taken orally. The antiprotozoal activity of Nitazoxanide is thought to be due to interference with the enzyme-dependent electron transfer process Pyruvate Ferredoxin Oxido Reductase (PFOR). This process is required for protozoa's anaerobic energy metabolism. In vitro, nitazoxanide and its metabolites, tizoxanid, suppress the growth of Cryptosporidium parvum sporozoites and oocysts, as well as Giardia lamblia trophozoites.

Dosage & Administration Zox Suspension

Age 1-3 years: 1 tea-spoonfull or 5 ml suspension every 12 hours for 3 days.
Age 4-11 years: 2 tea-spoonfulls or 10 ml suspension every 12 hours for 3 days.
Age 12 years or above: 5 tea-spoonfulls (25 ml) suspension or 1 tablet every 12 hours for 3 days.
It is recommended to be administered with food.

Interaction

• Warfarin: Zox Suspension 30 ml may interact with warfarin, a blood thinner, and potentially increase the risk of bleeding. It is important to monitor the blood clotting time and adjust the dosage of warfarin accordingly when using Zox Suspension 30ml.
• Lorazepam: Zox Suspension 30ml may interact with lorazepam, a medication used to treat anxiety. The combination of these drugs can cause increased sedation and drowsiness. Close monitoring is necessary, and your doctor may need to adjust the dosage of lorazepam.
• Valproic Acid: Zox Suspension 30 ml may interact with valproic acid, a medication used to treat seizures. Concurrent use of these drugs may increase the concentration of valproic acid in the blood, leading to potential side effects. Your doctor may need to monitor the levels of valproic acid and adjust the dosage if necessary.
• It is important to inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements, to avoid any potential drug interactions.
• Regarding the interaction with alcohol, it is generally advised to avoid alcohol consumption while taking Zox Suspension 30ml as it may increase the risk of dizziness and other side effects.
• Zox Suspension 30ml should be used with caution in individuals with liver or kidney diseases, asthma, diabetes, and a weakened immune system. Your doctor will consider these factors and may adjust the dosage or closely monitor your condition during treatment.

Contraindications

It is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Nitazoxanide or any components of the preparation.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Nitazoxanide is classified as a pregnancy category B by the US Food and Drug Administration. However, no suitable and well-controlled studies in pregnant women have been conducted. Because animal reproduction studies do not always predict human response, this medication should only be used during pregnancy if absolutely necessary. Human milk has been found to contain nitazoxanide. As a result, Nitazoxanide should be used with caution during lactation.

Precautions & Warnings

Patients with hepatic and biliary disease, as well as those with renal disease, should use nitazoxanide with caution.
