Description:

Vitamin D3 is a fat-soluble sterol that plays a crucial role in regulating calcium and phosphate homeostasis, as well as bone mineralization. It is essential for maintaining healthy bones as it facilitates the absorption of calcium from the gastrointestinal tract. Additionally, vitamin D stimulates bone formation, which is vital for overall bone health. Adequate levels of vitamin D are necessary to ensure proper bone strength and density.

Interaction

Indeed, there are several interactions and considerations to be aware of when taking vitamin D supplements:

  1. Increased risk of hypercalcemia (high blood calcium levels) when taken with thiazide diuretics, calcium, or phosphate supplements.
  2. Antiepileptic medications (carbamazepine, phenobarbitone, phenytoin, and primidone) may increase the requirements for vitamin D.
  3. Rifampicin and isoniazid may reduce the efficacy of vitamin D.
  4. Corticosteroids may counteract the effects of vitamin D.
  5. Digoxin or any cardiac glycoside should be used with caution when taking vitamin D supplements.
  6. Reduced absorption of vitamin D when taken with cholestyramine, colestipol, mineral oil, or orlistat.
  7. Interaction with ketoconazole.

It's important to inform your healthcare provider about all the medications and supplements you are taking to avoid potential interactions and to ensure the safe and effective use of vitamin D supplements.

Contraindications

It is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Vitamin D3.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Studies have shown the safe use of doses up to 4000 IU during pregnancy. The recommended daily intake for pregnant women is 400 IU, however, in women who are considered to be Vitamin D3 deficient a higher dose may be required. During pregnancy, women should follow the advice of their medical practitioner as their requirements may vary depending on the severity of their disease and their response to treatment

Vitamin D3 and its metabolites are excreted in breast milk. Overdose in infants induced by nursing mothers has not been observed; however, when prescribing additional vitamin D3 to a breastfed child the practitioner should consider the dose of any additional vitamin D3 given to the mother.

Precautions & Warnings
  • It should be used with caution in patients with impaired renal function.
  • The safety & efficacy of Vitamin D3 in children under 12 years have not been established.
  • People with certain conditions should be cautious when considering taking vitamin D supplements, including those with high blood calcium or phosphorus levels, heart problems, and kidney disease.
  • Vitamin D should be taken with adequate amounts of both calcium and magnesium supplementation. When calcium levels are low due to insufficient vitamin D and calcium intake, the body activates the parathyroid gland, leading to the production of PTH (parathyroid hormone). PTH helps in the production of vitamin D hormone and assists in the removal of calcium from the bones to be used in essential functions, such as neutralizing body acidity.
  • For lactating individuals, it is important to use vitamin D supplements with caution, as the drug can be distributed into breast milk. Always consult with a healthcare professional before starting any supplements, especially during pregnancy and lactation, to ensure safe and appropriate usage.
Storage Conditions

Keep below 30º C temperature, protected from light & moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.
