Indication
The prescription drug Prosma is used to stop the symptoms of asthma. By lessening inflammation (swelling) in the lungs, it aids in lowering the frequency and intensity of asthma attacks. Prosma can be taken with or without food, but the best results come from taking it simultaneously. It should be regarded as medical advice.
Pharmacology
Similar to sodium chromoglycate, ketotifen has been used in the prevention of asthma because of its anti-allergic properties. Additionally, it exhibits antihistamine properties. Ketotifen is effective at preventing asthma attacks and has potent anti-anaphylactic properties. In contrast to its anti-anaphylactic effects, ketotifen has a long-lasting inhibitory effect on histamine reactions. According to research, ketotifen is just as effective when taken orally by asthmatics as an inhaled selective mast cell stabilizer. Antihistamines failed in such experiments. The effectiveness of ketotifen has been studied in depth through clinical trials. Asthma attacks were less frequent, more severe, and last less time for the patients; in some cases, there were no attacks at all. It was also possible to gradually cut back on bronchodilators and/or corticosteroids. Ketotifen's prophylactic activity might take a few weeks to fully take hold. A current asthma attack cannot be stopped by ketotifen.
Dosage & Administration
Interaction
Sedatives, hypnotics, antihistamines, and alcohol may be amplified by ketotifen. A reversible decrease in platelet count has been documented in a few patients taking Tiffen with oral antidiabetic medications, leading to the recommendation that this combination is avoided.
Contraindications
A reversible drop in platelet count has been noted in a few patients taking Ketotifen with oral antidiabetic medication, leading to the recommendation that this combination is avoided. Despite the lack of evidence of a teratogenic impact, Ketotifen is not recommended during pregnancy or when breastfeeding is not possible.
Side Effects
Drowsiness, dry mouth, and slight dizziness may occur at the start of treatment, although these side effects normally go away on their own after a few days.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Ketotifen is not suggested during pregnancy or lactation, despite the lack of evidence of any teratogenic effect.
Precautions & Warnings
It is crucial to take the previous medication for at least two weeks after starting Ketotifen in order to prevent an asthma flare-up. This is especially true for systemic corticosteroids and ACTH due to the potential for adrenocortical insufficiency in steroid-dependent patients. If there is a recurrent infection, specialized antibiotic therapy must be used in addition to ketotifen treatment. Patients should be advised not to drive or operate machinery until the effects of Ketotifen treatment on the person are known as reactions that may be impaired on the first day of taking the medication. Patients should be urged to abstain from alcohol consumption.
Storage Conditions
Protect from light and store in a cool, dry location. Keep out of children's reach.
