Spirulina is a natural nutritional supplement that is enriched with proteins, vitamins, minerals, essential amino acids and essential fatty acids like gamma linolenic acid. It is called a wonderful gift or wonder food of the earth. Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) belongs to genus phylum cyanobacteria. Cyanobacteria are classified as either blue-green algae or as blue-green bacteria.
Spirulina is considered as a rich source of natural proteins, vitamins such as Vitamin A (as β-carotene), Vitamin K, Vitamin B1 (Thiamine), Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin), Vitamin B3 (Niacin), Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine), Vitamin B12 and minerals such as zinc, magnesium, calcium, iron, manganese, selenium with unique potent antioxidants & pigments such as Chlorophyll, Phycocyanin, C-phycocyanin, carotenoids, zeaxanthin and enzyme such as Superoxide dismutase (SOD).
Spirulina or its active constituent, C-phycocyanin is promising in chemoprevention, neuroprotection, antiviral action, cardiovascular protection, hepatoprotection, anti-inflammatory action, antioxidant action and protection against chemical- and drug-induced toxicities.
