How does Albutein 25% work?

Albutein 25% comprises human albumin with properties akin to regular human plasma in equal proportions. Its mechanism involves augmenting the circulating plasma volume by roughly the same volume infused. This infusion of albumin lingers in the body for extended durations and rapidly restores blood volume to normal levels.

Indication

Albutein is derived from human blood plasma proteins and increases plasma volume or serum albumin levels. It contains 25% human albumin, prepared from pooled human plasma collected from FDA-approved plasmapheresis centers. The solution's osmotic effect is higher than normal plasma, containing sodium ions.

Albutein 25% is utilized to treat blood volume loss by replenishing lost body fluids due to trauma, bleeding, surgery, or kidney dialysis. It effectively addresses low blood albumin levels. The administration should occur under medical supervision, avoiding use in case of known allergies to the injection. Inform your doctor about severe heart disease, and regular blood pressure checks and tests might be advised during usage.

Albutein 25% is available in a single-dose, latex-free, flexible container with no preservatives, PVC, DEHP, or plasticizers. The protective overwrap is also latex-free and devoid of chlorine or plasticizers.

Pharmacology

Human albumin increases intravascular oncotic pressure and causes the movement of fluids from interstitial into intravascular space. Human albumin solutions are available in various concentrations. Solutions containing 5% human albumin are usually used in hypovolemic patients, whereas more concentrated 25% solutions are recommended in patients in whom fluid and sodium intake must be minimized e.g. patients with hypoproteinaemia or cerebral edema or in pediatric patients.

Dosage & Administration of

Adult Dose:

• Initially, 25 g of albumin, was adjusted based on patient response.
• Usual infusion rates: 1-2 ml/minute.

Child Dose:

• Up to 1 g/kg, adjusted based on patient response.
• Usual infusion rates: 1-2 ml/minute.
• Maximum limits: Not to exceed 250 g/48 hr or 6 g/kg/day.

Administration: Albutein 25% is administered by a doctor or nurse into the vein. Your doctor determines the appropriate dose and duration based on your age, body weight, and medical condition.

Interaction

Albumin solution should not be mixed with protein hydrolysates or alcoholic solutions. Risk of atypical reactions to ACE inhibitors in patients undergoing therapeutic plasma exchange with albumin human replacement.

Cardiac failure, severe anemia, history of hypersensitivity, parenteral nutrition.
