Pharmacology

Doxycycline is a tetracycline antibiotic that exerts its antimicrobial effect by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit of bacteria. By doing so, it interferes with the bacterial protein synthesis process, preventing the bacteria from producing essential proteins needed for their growth and replication.

Doxycycline exhibits bacteriostatic activity, which means it inhibits the growth and reproduction of bacteria rather than directly killing them. It is effective against a wide range of both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, making it useful in the treatment of various bacterial infections.

As with any antibiotic, it's essential to use doxycycline responsibly and as prescribed by a healthcare professional to avoid the development of antibiotic resistance and to ensure its effectiveness in treating bacterial infections.

  • If you are allergic to Doxycycline or any other components of this medicine.
  • If you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant or breastfeeding.
Pregnancy & Lactation

During pregnancy, the use of doxycycline is generally not recommended unless considered essential for the welfare of the patient. The majority of reported experience with doxycycline during human pregnancy is limited to short-term exposure in the first trimester. There are no human data available to assess the effects of long-term therapy with doxycycline in pregnant women, such as in the treatment of anthrax exposure. Animal studies have shown evidence of embryotoxicity when animals were treated with doxycycline early in pregnancy.

Doxycycline is excreted in human milk, but the extent of absorption by breastfed infants is not known. Short-term use of doxycycline by lactating women is not necessarily contraindicated. However, the effects of prolonged exposure to doxycycline in breast milk are unknown. Due to the potential for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants from doxycycline, a decision should be made by the mother, in consultation with her physician, to either discontinue nursing or to discontinue the drug, taking into account the importance of the drug to the mother's health.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, it is essential to discuss the risks and benefits of using doxycycline with your healthcare provider before starting or continuing the medication. They can help you make an informed decision regarding the appropriate course of action for your specific situation.

Precautions & Warnings

The use of drugs from the tetracycline group, including doxycycline, during tooth development (which includes the last half of pregnancy, infancy, and childhood up to the age of 12 years) may lead to permanent discoloration of the teeth. Due to this risk, tetracyclines should generally not be used in this age group unless there are no other effective treatment options or if other drugs are contraindicated.

In the case of lactation, doxycycline enters breast milk, and its use is not recommended in breastfeeding women. The potential for adverse effects on nursing infants, such as tooth discoloration or other side effects, should be considered when making decisions about using doxycycline while breastfeeding.

If there is a need for treatment with doxycycline during pregnancy, infancy, childhood, or while breastfeeding, it is crucial to consult with a healthcare professional. They can evaluate the potential risks and benefits and help make an informed decision based on the specific circumstances of the patient. In some cases, alternative treatment options may be considered to minimize the risk of adverse effects on tooth development or breastfeeding infants.

Storage Conditions

Store the medicine below 25°C in a cool and dry place. Keep it away from children and pets.
