How does

It works by stabilizing the brain cells and thus reduces the excitability of the brain cells.

Over Dose Effect

Overdose symptoms may include:

1. Drowsiness
2. CNS (Central Nervous System) depression
3. Confusion
4. Lethargy (abnormal drowsiness or fatigue)
5. Ataxia (loss of coordination)
6. Respiratory depression (slowed or stopped breathing)
7. Hypotension (low blood pressure)

• Seek medical attention immediately: Go to the nearest hospital or emergency room.
• Contact your doctor: Inform your healthcare provider about the overdose.

Quick Suggestions:

• Take Clobazam with or without food. Do not take in larger amounts than advised. 
• Consult the doctor if you experience any undesirable effects. 
• Do not stop taking the medicine without consulting your doctor as it may cause withdrawal symptoms.

Indications

Clobazam is used in the treatment of epilepsy/seizures and severe anxiety.

Pharmacology

Clobazam binds to GABA receptors, increasing the time the chloride ionophore is open, resulting in membrane hyperpolarization and stability.

Dosage & Administration:

General Dosage Principles:

• Keep the dose as low as possible.
• Careful consideration of interference with alertness and reaction time.

Anxiety States:

• Adults and adolescents over 15 years: Initial dose of 20 mg daily, not exceeding a total daily dose of 30 mg.
• Elderly: Lower initial doses, with a maintenance dose of 10 to 15 mg daily.
• Children (3 to 15 years): Daily dose of 5 to 10 mg.

Epilepsy (Combination Therapy):

• Adults and adolescents: Start with small doses (5 to 15 mg daily) and titrate gradually to a maximum daily dose of about 80 mg.
• Children (3 to 15 years): Start with 5 mg daily, a maintenance dose of 0.3 to 1.0 mg/kg body weight daily.

Administration:

• Tablets can be administered whole or crushed and mixed in applesauce.
• The 10 mg tablets can be divided into equal halves of 5 mg.
• Can be given with or without food.

Interaction

• Alcohol increases serum concentration.
• Caution with hypnotics, antidepressants, phenobarbital, enzyme inhibitors, and other interacting drugs.

Contraindications

Respiratory depression, acute pulmonary insufficiency, sleep apnea, myasthenia gravis, alcohol dependence.
