Glucosamine: Glucosamine is a naturally occurring amino sugar involved in the formation of glycosaminoglycans and proteoglycans, which are important components of joint cartilage. Glucosamine supplements are used to support joint health, although their clinical benefits for cartilage repair and osteoarthritis symptoms may vary.
Diacerein: Diacerein is an anthraquinone derivative used in osteoarthritis management. It and its active metabolite, rhein, affect interleukin-1-related inflammatory pathways involved in cartilage degradation. It may help improve osteoarthritis symptoms, but its use is limited by the risk of diarrhoea and potential liver injury.
- Use cautiously in patients with a history of liver disease.
- Diacerein may cause severe or persistent diarrhoea and, rarely, liver injury.
- Maintain adequate hydration if gastrointestinal symptoms occur, and seek medical advice if diarrhoea persists.
