Razithro is prescribed to treat infections caused by susceptible organisms, including:
- Respiratory tract infections: bronchitis, pneumonia, sinusitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis
- Ear infections: otitis media
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Sexually transmitted infections: nongonococcal urethritis and cervicitis due to Chlamydia trachomatis

Azithromycin, an acid-stable macrolide, is well absorbed orally and accumulates in phagocytes, concentrating at infection sites. It inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. It has a long half-life (~68 hours), allowing once-daily dosing and short-course therapy. Primarily excreted in bile; ~6% is excreted in urine unchanged.
- Do not stop treatment early, even if symptoms improve.
- Report persistent diarrhea or bloody stools.
- Avoid operating machinery if dizziness or hearing issues occur.

✔️ Dosage & Administration
Adults: 500 mg once daily for 3 days or as 500 mg on day 1, followed by 250 mg once daily for the next 4 days.
Chlamydia infections: 1 g single dose or alternative 3-day regimen (500 mg, then 250 mg for 2 days).
Children (based on weight):
- 15–25 kg: 200 mg/day for 3 days
- 26–35 kg: 300 mg/day for 3 days
- 36–45 kg: 400 mg/day for 3 days
Typhoid fever: 500 mg daily for 7–10 days
Pregnancy (Category B): Use only if necessary; no fetal harm seen in animals
Lactation: Unknown if excreted in breast milk; use with caution
Renal Impairment: No adjustment needed in mild cases; caution in severe cases
Hepatic Impairment: Avoid use
Elderly: No specific precautions; monitor for usual side effects

- Nausea, abdominal discomfort, vomiting, diarrhea, flatulence
- Rash, photosensitivity, liver enzyme elevation, neutrophil reduction, hearing disturbances (rare and reversible)
- Hypersensitivity reactions: rash, swelling, difficulty breathing
- Cholestatic jaundice
✔️ Drug Interactions
- Antacids: Reduce absorption; take azithromycin 1 hour before or 2 hours after
- Cyclosporin, Digoxin, Warfarin: Monitor blood levels
- Theophylline, Methylprednisolone, Carbamazepine: Generally safe, but monitor
- Ergot derivatives: Avoid due to the risk of ergotism

- Known hypersensitivity to azithromycin or other macrolides
- Hepatic impairment
- Concurrent use with ergot derivatives
✔️ Precautions
- Monitor for signs of allergic reaction, particularly in those with history of macrolide hypersensitivity.
- Discontinue immediately if rash, swelling, or breathing difficulty occurs.
- Prolonged QT interval and cardiac arrhythmias are rare but possible—use with caution in at-risk patients.
