Zypred combines loteprednol, a corticosteroid that reduces eye inflammation, with gatifloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that treats susceptible bacterial infections.
Loteprednol works by reducing the production of inflammatory mediators, helping relieve swelling, redness, and irritation. Gatifloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for bacterial DNA replication and cell division. Together, these ingredients help control inflammation and susceptible bacterial infections in the eye.

Zypred Ophthalmic Suspension is used to treat steroid-responsive inflammatory conditions of the eye when a bacterial eye infection is present, or there is a risk of developing one. It may be prescribed for conditions affecting the conjunctiva, cornea, and anterior segment of the eye, including allergic conjunctivitis, superficial punctate keratitis, herpes zoster keratitis, iritis, and cyclitis. It is also used to manage inflammation following eye surgery. Acne is not an ocular indication and has therefore been omitted.
The dosage and duration of Zypred Ophthalmic Suspension should be determined by an ophthalmologist according to the patient's condition and response to treatment. Follow the prescribed instructions carefully, and do not increase the frequency or stop treatment prematurely without medical advice.
No specific drug interactions have been established for this preparation. However, inform your doctor about all medicines you use, including other eye drops. When multiple ophthalmic medicines are prescribed, separate their applications by at least 5 minutes.
Zypred Ophthalmic Suspension should not be used in patients with:
- Known hypersensitivity to loteprednol, gatifloxacin, or any other ingredient in the preparation.
- Most viral infections of the cornea or conjunctiva, including epithelial herpes simplex keratitis.
- Fungal infections of the eye.
- Mycobacterial infections of the eye.
Possible side effects include:
There are limited data on the use of Zypred during pregnancy. It should be used only when the prescribing doctor determines that the expected benefit outweighs the potential risk. It is not known whether the medicine passes into human breast milk; breastfeeding patients should consult their doctor before use.
Store at room temperature and protect from light. Do not freeze. Keep the bottle tightly closed and avoid touching the dropper tip to any surface. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for disposal after opening; do not use the suspension beyond the stated period or expiry date.
