Axim CV 500 is a combination antibiotic containing Cefuroxime and Clavulanic Acid. It is used to treat a range of bacterial infections caused by susceptible microorganisms. Cefuroxime kills bacteria by interfering with bacterial cell-wall formation, while clavulanic acid inhibits certain beta-lactamase enzymes that can otherwise reduce the effectiveness of cefuroxime.
Axim CV 500 is a prescription medicine and should be taken only as directed by a doctor.
Cefuroxime: A second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It binds to bacterial penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) and inhibits the final stages of peptidoglycan synthesis, which is essential for bacterial cell-wall formation. This weakens the bacterial cell wall and leads to bacterial cell death.
Clavulanic Acid: A beta-lactamase inhibitor. Certain bacteria produce beta-lactamase enzymes that can break down beta-lactam antibiotics. Clavulanic acid inhibits some of these enzymes and can therefore help protect cefuroxime from enzymatic inactivation and extend its activity against certain susceptible beta-lactamase-producing bacteria.

Take Axim CV 500 exactly according to your doctor's prescription. The appropriate dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of infection, age, kidney function, and clinical response.
Common cefuroxime-based regimens may include:
Some infections require different doses or durations. Follow the exact regimen prescribed for your condition.
Pediatric dosing is based primarily on body weight, age and the type of infection. Cefuroxime-based pediatric regimens may range from approximately 20–30 mg/kg/day in divided doses for selected infections.
Do not administer the adult 500 mg strength to a child unless specifically prescribed.
Cefuroxime is primarily eliminated through the kidneys. Patients with significant renal impairment may require dosage or dosing-interval adjustment.
Prolonged antibiotic therapy may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible microorganisms, including fungi. If a superinfection develops, appropriate treatment should be initiated.
Cefuroxime may also interfere with certain laboratory tests, so inform healthcare professionals that you are taking this medicine before undergoing investigations.
Available clinical experience has not established a clear harmful effect of cefuroxime during pregnancy. However, Axim CV 500 should be used during pregnancy only when clearly indicated and prescribed by a healthcare professional.
Cefuroxime is excreted in small amounts into breast milk. It may be used during breastfeeding when clinically appropriate, but infants should be monitored for diarrhea, oral thrush or other unusual symptoms.
