Febuxostat belongs to a class of medicines called xanthine oxidase inhibitors. It works by blocking the enzyme responsible for converting hypoxanthine and xanthine into uric acid. This reduces uric acid production in the body and helps prevent urate crystal formation over time.
Febux 40 is used to manage chronic gout associated with elevated uric acid levels in the blood (hyperuricemia). Excess uric acid can form crystals in and around the joints, causing pain, swelling, redness, and inflammation.
Febux 40 helps lower uric acid levels and reduce the risk of future gout attacks. It is a long-term urate-lowering treatment and is not a painkiller for immediate relief of gout symptoms.
Adult dose: The usual starting dose is 40 mg once daily. Depending on serum uric acid levels and the applicable prescribing guidelines, the doctor may increase the dose to 80 mg daily.
The appropriate dose may vary depending on kidney or liver function and the local product label. Do not adjust the dose yourself.
Febuxostat can interact with certain medicines. Tell your doctor about all medicines you use, particularly:
Do not start or stop any medicine without consulting your doctor.
Febuxostat should not be used with azathioprine or mercaptopurine. It is also unsuitable for patients with known hypersensitivity to febuxostat or any of the tablet's ingredients.
Available information on febuxostat use during pregnancy is limited. It should be used only if a doctor determines that treatment is necessary after assessing the potential benefits and risks.
