Povidone-Iodine ophthalmic preparations are used as topical ocular antiseptics, particularly for reducing microbial contamination of the ocular surface before certain ophthalmic procedures.
Note: The supplied source describes the ophthalmic preparation as a treatment for dry eye and as a tear substitute. This indication is not consistent with povidone-iodine's usual pharmacological role, so the specific product formulation and registered indication should be verified before publishing that claim.
Povidone-Iodine is a complex of iodine and povidone, a water-soluble polymer. The complex gradually releases free iodine, which provides broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity while generally causing less irritation than elemental iodine.
Free iodine rapidly inactivates microorganisms by disrupting cellular proteins and other essential structures. Povidone-Iodine is active against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, fungi, yeasts, viruses, protozoa, and spores.
Its antimicrobial activity can remain effective in the presence of substances such as blood, serum, pus, mucosal secretions, and water.
For treatment of infection:
Apply a thin layer to the affected area once or twice daily or during dressing changes, generally for up to 14 days unless otherwise directed by a physician.
For prevention of infection:
Apply once or twice weekly, or as advised by a healthcare professional. Clean and dry the affected area before application. A dressing or bandage may be applied when appropriate.
Apply the solution at full strength as required by the indication. It may be used as a paint, spray, or wet soak and may be covered with a dressing when appropriate.
Adults and children over 6 years:
Use undiluted or dilute with an equal volume of warm water. Gargle or rinse with up to 10 mL for approximately 30 seconds, without swallowing.
It may be used up to 4 times daily for a maximum of 14 consecutive days, unless otherwise directed by a registered physician or dental surgeon.
For operating-room personnel:
Wet the hands and forearms, apply approximately 5 mL of Povidone-Iodine Surgical Scrub, and thoroughly scrub all areas for approximately 5 minutes, paying particular attention to the fingernails. Add water to produce a rich lather and rinse thoroughly. Repeat the procedure with another approximately 5 mL when required by the surgical protocol.
For preoperative preparation of patients:
Wet the area with water after shaving when necessary. Apply sufficient surgical scrub to cover the area, develop a lather, and scrub thoroughly for approximately 5 minutes. Remove with sterile gauze moistened with water.
Apply a light layer of powder over the affected area. Once dry, it forms an antiseptic protective layer. Use only as directed by a healthcare professional.
The dose depends on the specific ophthalmic formulation and clinical indication. If the registered product is indicated for ocular antisepsis, it should be administered strictly according to the ophthalmologist's or manufacturer's instructions.
Povidone-Iodine may interact chemically with:
Regular or prolonged use in patients receiving lithium may increase the risk of thyroid dysfunction because of iodine exposure.
Arodin should not be used in patients with known hypersensitivity to povidone-iodine or any component of the formulation.
Regular or prolonged use should generally be avoided or carefully supervised in patients with:
Povidone-Iodine powder should not be applied to deep body cavities or used in children under 2 years of age unless specifically advised by a physician.
Possible adverse effects include:
Extensive application, particularly over large areas of damaged skin or severe burns, may increase systemic iodine absorption and potentially cause:
Povidone-Iodine may also interfere with certain thyroid function tests.
Pregnancy:
Extensive or repeated use of povidone-iodine during pregnancy is generally not recommended because absorbed iodine may affect fetal thyroid function. Use only when specifically considered necessary by a healthcare professional.
Breastfeeding:
Limited amounts may be absorbed depending on the formulation and extent of application. Repeated or extensive use should be avoided unless recommended by a physician.
Gargle & Mouthwash/Surgical Scrub:
Regular or prolonged use during pregnancy and breastfeeding should be avoided unless specifically advised by a healthcare professional.
Ophthalmic preparation:
Adequate safety data in human pregnancy and breastfeeding may be limited. Use only when clearly indicated and under medical supervision.
