Povidone-Iodine is a complex of iodine and povidone, a water-soluble polymer. The complex gradually releases free iodine, which provides broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity while generally causing less irritation than elemental iodine.
Free iodine rapidly inactivates microorganisms by disrupting cellular proteins and other essential structures. Povidone-Iodine is active against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, fungi, yeasts, viruses, protozoa, and spores.
Its antimicrobial activity can remain effective in the presence of substances such as blood, serum, pus, mucosal secretions, and water.
Adults and children over 6 years:
Use undiluted or dilute with an equal volume of warm water. Gargle or rinse with up to 10 mL for approximately 30 seconds, without swallowing.
It may be used up to 4 times daily for a maximum of 14 consecutive days, unless otherwise directed by a registered physician or dental surgeon.
Povidone-Iodine may interact chemically with:
- Strong alkalis
- Sodium thiosulfate
- Sodium metabisulfite
- Thiomersal
- Do not swallow the preparation.
- Avoid prolonged or continuous use because significant iodine absorption may occur.
- Do not use for more than 14 days unless advised by a healthcare professional.
- Not recommended for children under 6 years.
- Patients taking lithium should consult their physician before use.
