Roxiclav (Cefuroxime)
- Roxiclav is indicated for treating infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including:
- Upper respiratory tract infections – Pharyngitis, tonsillitis (Streptococcus pyogenes)
- Ear infections – Acute otitis media (S. pneumoniae, H. influenzae, M. catarrhalis)
- Sinus infections – Acute bacterial maxillary sinusitis (S. pneumoniae, H. influenzae)
- Lower respiratory tract infections – Pneumonia, bronchitis, and secondary bacterial infections caused by S. pneumoniae, H. influenzae, K. spp., S. aureus, S. pyogenes, or E. coli
- Skin and soft tissue infections – Due to S. aureus or S. pyogenes
- Urinary tract infections – Due to E. coli or K. pneumoniae
- Bone and joint infections – Caused by S. aureus
- Gonorrhoea – Penicillinase and non-penicillinase producing N. gonorrhoeae
- Early Lyme disease – Due to Borrelia burgdorferi

Oral (Tablet/Suspension):
Adults & adolescents (≥13 years):
Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis: 250 mg twice daily for 5–10 days
Sinusitis: 250 mg twice daily for 10 days
Bronchitis: 250–500 mg twice daily for 5–10 days
Skin/UTI: 250–500 mg twice daily for 7–10 days
Gonorrhoea: 1 g single dose
Pneumonia: 250–500 mg twice daily for 5–10 days
Typhoid Fever (MDR): 500 mg twice daily for 10–14 days
Early Lyme Disease: 500 mg twice daily for 20 days
Children (3 months–12 years):
Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis: 20 mg/kg/day in 2 doses
Otitis media/Sinusitis/Impetigo: 30 mg/kg/day in 2 doses
Duration: 5–10 days
✔️ Side Effects: Mextil 500
Generally mild and temporary — rash, nausea, vomiting, or gastrointestinal upset. Prolonged use may lead to secondary fungal infections like Candida.
✔️ Precautions:
- Use with caution in patients with a history of colitis or concurrent diuretic therapy.
- Cross-reactivity may occur in patients allergic to penicillin.
- Adjust dosage in renal impairment.
Pregnancy Category B. Use only if clearly needed.
Cefuroxime is excreted in breast milk — caution advised during lactation.
