✔️ Side Effects:

Common (≥10%):

• Diarrhea (4–11%, depending on treatment duration)

Less Common (1–10%):

• Decreased hemoglobin/hematocrit
• Eosinophilia (increase in white blood cells)
• Nausea or vomiting
• Vaginitis
• Temporary increase in liver enzymes
• Thrombophlebitis (vein inflammation)
• Increased lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels

Rare (<1%):

• Anemia
• Cholestasis (bile flow blockage)
• Colitis (colon inflammation)
• Dyspnea (shortness of breath)
• Epidermal necrolysis (skin death)
• Kidney issues
• Jaundice
• Nephritis (kidney inflammation)
• Prolonged clotting time
• Stevens-Johnson syndrome (severe skin reaction)

✔️ How Furocef DS Works:

Furocef DS contains Cefuroxime, which works by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) in bacteria. This inhibits the final step in bacterial cell wall synthesis, weakening the bacterial cell wall and leading to cell death.

✔️ How to Use Furocef DS:

• Do not self-administer this medication.
• If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If it's almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose—do not double the dose.

✔️ Dosage & Administration:

For Adults:

• Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis: 250 mg orally every 12 hours for 10 days
• Acute Bronchitis Exacerbation: 250–500 mg orally every 12 hours for 10 days or 500–750 mg IV every 8 hours (switch to oral when possible)
• Uncomplicated Pneumonia: 750 mg IV or IM every 8 hours
• Skin Infections: 250–500 mg orally every 12 hours for 10 days or 750 mg IV/IM every 8 hours
• Urinary Tract Infections: 125–250 mg orally every 12 hours for 7–10 days or 750 mg IV/IM every 8 hours
• Lyme Disease (early stage): 500 mg orally every 12 hours for 20 days
• Gonorrhea: 1 g orally once or 1.5 g IM once at two sites, with 1 g probenecid orally
• Severe Infections: 1.5 g IV every 6–8 hours

For Children:

• Oral Dose: 20–30 mg/kg/day every 12 hours
• Bone & Joint Infections (IV): Up to 100 mg/kg/day
• IV/IM Dose: 100–150 mg/kg/day every 8 hours

Renal Impairment Adjustments:

• Hemodialysis: Additional 750 mg dose after each session
• Peritoneal Dialysis: 750 mg twice daily
• Creatinine Clearance 10–20 ml/min: 750 mg twice daily
• Creatinine Clearance <10 ml/min: 750 mg once daily

✔️ Precautions:

• Allergic Reactions: Avoid if allergic to cephalosporins or penicillin.
• Renal Impairment: Use with caution in severe kidney issues.
• Pregnancy & Lactation: Use cautiously during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The drug is present in breast milk in minimal amounts; consult your doctor.
• Alcohol: Avoid alcohol as it may increase side effects.

✔️ Pregnancy & Lactation Notes:

• Pregnancy: Studies show no significant risk of birth defects or miscarriage.
• Lactation: Minimal drug levels are present in breast milk (<1% of the adult dose). While no adverse effects have been reported, consult your doctor.

✔️ Drug Interactions:

• May increase nephrotoxic effects when combined with strong diuretics (e.g., furosemide) and aminoglycosides.
• May enhance the effect of oral anticoagulants.
• Probenecid may increase cefuroxime levels by reducing its elimination.
