✔️ Side Effects

Common:

Nausea, abdominal pain, indigestion, diarrhea

Less Common/Serious:

Dizziness, flatulence, headache, rash, pruritus

Elevated liver enzymes, eosinophilia, thrombocytopenia, and leukopenia

Vaginitis, fever, erythema multiforme, Stevens–Johnson syndrome

Potentially fatal: Pseudomembranous colitis

✔️ Dosage & Administration

Adults:

• Usual dose: 200–400 mg daily, taken as a single dose or in two divided doses.
• Gonorrhea: 400 mg single dose.
• Typhoid fever: 20 mg/kg/day in two divided doses for 7–14 days, depending on severity.

Pediatric Dose:

• Children ≥6 months: 8 mg/kg/day in 1–2 divided doses.
• Typhoid fever: 15–20 mg/kg/day divided every 12 hours for 7–14 days (max 400 mg/day).
• <6 months: Safety and efficacy not established.

Renal Impairment:

• CrCl <20 mL/min: Maximum dose 200 mg daily.

✔️ Drug Interactions

Probenecid: May increase plasma concentrations of cefixime.

Anticoagulants: May prolong prothrombin time, increasing bleeding risk.

✔️ Administration

May be taken with or without food; taking with food or milk helps reduce gastrointestinal discomfort.

✔️ Use in Pregnancy & Lactation

Pregnancy: Available data do not indicate a major risk of birth defects or miscarriage.

Lactation: Unknown if excreted in human milk, but likely present; use with caution considering the benefits of breastfeeding and the mother’s clinical need.

✔️ Missed Dose

If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If it’s almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one. Do not double the dose.

✔️ Contraindications

Known hypersensitivity to cefixime, other cephalosporins, or any component of the formulation.

✔️ Precautions

Use cautiously in patients with renal impairment, gastrointestinal disease, or a history of hypersensitivity to penicillins.

Safety in pregnancy and lactation is not fully established.

Discontinue if allergic reactions such as rash, itching, swelling, or breathing difficulty occur.

✔️ Storage:

Keep below 30°C temperature, away from light & moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.
