✔️ How does Algicid Plus Chewable Tablet work?

• Antacids: Calcium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate neutralize excess stomach acid, providing quick relief from indigestion and heartburn.
• Alginate: Sodium alginate forms a protective barrier (raft) on top of the stomach contents, which reduces gastroesophageal reflux and soothes the esophagus.

✔️ Side Effects of Algicid Plus Chewable Tablet

• Allergic reactions such as urticaria, bronchospasm, anaphylactic or anaphylactoid reactions.
• Ingestion of large amounts may cause alkalosis, hypercalcemia, acid rebound, milk-alkali syndrome, or constipation.

• Use with caution in individuals on a sodium-restricted diet, those with hypercalcemia, nephrocalcinosis, or recurrent calcium-containing renal calculi.
• Reduced efficacy with very low levels of gastric acid.

✔️ Pharmacology

The action is physical rather than systemic. Upon ingestion, it rapidly reacts with gastric acid to form a raft of alginic acid gel with a near-neutral pH. This gel floats on top of the stomach contents, impeding gastro-esophageal reflux for up to 4 hours. In severe cases, the raft may be refluxed into the esophagus, protecting it from acidic and bile reflux.

✔️ Dosage & Administration of Algicid Plus Chewable Tablet

• Adults and children over 12 years: 10-20 mL after meals and at bedtime, up to 4 times a day (for suspension); 2-4 chewable tablets after meals and at bedtime, up to 4 times daily.
• Children 6-12 years: 5-10 mL after meals and at bedtime, up to 4 times a day.
• Children under 6 years: Not recommended.
• Elderly: No dose adjustments are required.

Overdosage symptoms may include abdominal distension, and symptomatic treatment should be given.

A 2-hour gap is recommended between taking Algicid Plus and medications like tetracyclines, digoxin, fluoroquinolone, iron salts, and others.
