Topical Urea:
- Properties: Bacteriostatic, bactericidal, fungistatic, proteolytic, hygroscopic, and mild local anesthetic.
- Mechanism of Action:
- Hygroscopic Property: Causes configurational changes in proteins in the stratum corneum.
- Softening Effect: Dissolves the intracellular matrix, loosening the horny layer of skin, shedding scaly skin, and softening hyperkeratotic areas.
- Therapeutic Effects: Depend on local concentrations rather than systemic absorption.
- Excretion: If absorbed, urea is excreted unchanged in the urine.
