Biozyl 400 is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent effective against bacteria and protozoa. It is widely used to treat infections of the respiratory tract, gastrointestinal system, skin, bones, reproductive organs, and oral cavity. Metronidazole — the active component — acts by damaging the DNA of susceptible microorganisms, resulting in the inhibition of protein synthesis and ultimately cell death.
This medicine is particularly effective against anaerobic bacteria and certain protozoal infections.

✔️ Contraindications:
History of hypersensitivity to metronidazole or other nitroimidazole derivatives. Pregnancy (1st trimester) and lactation.
✔️ Metronidazole Tablets:
Should be taken with food to minimize gastrointestinal discomfort.
✔️ Drug Interactions
- Concurrent use with disulfiram may cause psychotic reactions.
- May enhance the effects of oral anticoagulants, increasing the risk of bleeding.
- Lithium toxicity may occur due to elevated serum lithium levels.
- May reduce renal clearance and increase the toxicity of 5-fluorouracil.
- Can raise serum concentrations of ciclosporin and busulfan, leading to potential toxicity.
- Phenobarbital and phenytoin may enhance the metabolism of metronidazole, lowering its plasma concentration and therapeutic efficacy.
✔️ Precautions
- Use cautiously in patients with CNS disorders or seizure history; discontinue if any neurological abnormalities develop.
- Monitor total and differential leukocyte counts before and after treatment in patients with a history of blood dyscrasias.
- Hepatic impairment: Dose adjustment and plasma monitoring may be necessary in severe cases.
- Contains sodium — exercise caution in patients predisposed to edema.
- Prolonged use may lead to fungal or bacterial superinfections.
- Since metronidazole is excreted in breast milk, its use during lactation is not recommended.
